House of Un-American Activities Committee(HUAC)
The U.S. was so scared and paranoid of communism in America and in the American government they created the House of Un-American Activities Committee(HUAC) which investigated disloyalty and/or communism in America. -
GI Bill
Truman passed the GI Bill so that veterans could have benefits such as money for school, mortgages, etc. -
Berlin Airlift
The Soviet was trying to shove the U.S. out of the U.S.'s controlled area of Berlin in hopes of gaining control of Berlin. The U.S. still had troops in Berlin so instead of backing down and pulling their troops out of Berlin they used planes to fly over the Soviets blockade to get supplies to U.S. troops. The Soviet could've shot down our planes which would've started a war but the Soviet didn't do anything about it. -
NATO(North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
The U.S. is scared of communism spreading to the western hemisphere so they create an "alliance" with western Europe. -
Brinkmanship
The U.S. was pushing the Soviet to the verge of war hoping they'd back down. This could've ended in war but luckily it didn't. -
Interstate Highway System
There wasn't a quick way to get across the country, the interstate highway helped with this. It connected the nation. It helped with defense purposes. It made it easier to get weapons across the nation and to where they needed to be. -
Eisenhower Doctrine
The U.S. was scared of communism and it spreading. The Eisenhower doctrine instead of sending money to countries that were in danger of becoming communist and didn't want to be controlled by the Soviet anymore it sent military troops. Since the Soviet was communist and had many Satellite nations they didn't like this and it created more tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. We created this doctrine because of Hungary trying to revolt against the Soviet and break away but Hungary failed. -
Sputnik
The USSR sent sputnik into a low Earth orbit. This scared the U.S. because it's something new in space and they don't really know anything about it. They were also jealous and embarrassed that they weren't the first ones to get into space. -
U-2 Incident
The U.S. was curious what the communist Soviet was doing so they sent a spy plane over the Soviet. The plane was supposed to be unseen but the Soviets saw it and shot it down and took the pilot as a prisoner. The Soviet could've easily started war with us because of this but instead they kept the plane and the U.S. paid a ransom for the pilot. It also cancelled the Paris Summit that was supposed to be about reducing arms in the U.S. and Soviet. -
Bay of Pigs
Cuba is having a communist revolution which the leader, Castro, is a communist leader and some don't agree with communism so they are exiled. U.S. scared of communism spreading gave aid to the Cuban exiles to overthrow Castro but the exiles fail. This causes U.S. embarrassment and pushed Cuba to the Soviet Union. -
Berlin Wall
East Germans(controlled by the Soviet) are fleeing to West Germany(mostly controlled by the U.S.) because of communism. The U.S. allows the East Germans in West Germany but the Soviet wants to keep them in East Germany and the U.S. out of East Germany so they build the Berlin wall so that they can't flee to West Germany and West Germans can't get to East Germany. This separated a lot of families. It is a huge symbol of communism. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviet had placed weapons in Cuba which is only 90 miles from U.S. Florida. JFK demanded removal of the weapons so the U.S. blockaded Cuba too keep the Soviet out. This just creates more tension that we're at the brink of war. We don't go to war because the Soviet backs down and agrees to remove the weapons IF we(U.S.) don't invade Cuba again(Bay of Pigs).
