Surrender of Nazi Germany
The surrender of Nazi Germany after WWII caused the uneasy alliance between The U.S., Great Britain, and the Soviet Union to begin falling apart. The surrender caused both the U.S. and the Soviets to become World Powers which caused competition. -
Berlin Blockade
This was the attempt by the Soviet Union to starve out the Western side of Berlin in order to hope they surrender to communism. This cut off all American supplies going into Berlin and refused entry. -
Berlin Airlift
In response to the blockade, America began a massive airlift of food, water, and medicine to the city's citizens. This helped transfer West Berlin into a symbol of democracy and freedom. -
USSR tests first Nuclear Weapon
The USSR managed to create an atomic bomb larger than the Americans used in WWII. They become the second country to design and test an atomic bomb successfully. -
Chinese Revolution
Mao created the People's Republic of China. This caused China to become the largest socialist state with the youth of China fighting for this. -
Korean War
North Korea or the communist side wanted to take over the south and spread communism throughout all of Korea. With the support of the U.S., the South fought back against communism. -
Space Race Begins
This was the competition between the Soviets and the U.S. to see who could launch satellites, unmanned space probes, and aircraft into space. They competed to prove their technological and intellectual superiority. -
Berlin Wall
This was created to keep West Berlin separated from East Berlin in order to prevent the spreading of socialism. This was also to prevent the East Berlin population was escaping and leaving communism. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
This was the event that brought the U.S. and Soviets close to war through the Soviets smuggling missiles into Cuba so in the threat of an attack from the U.S. they would hit America. This was in response to the U.S. trying to take over Cuba to prevent communism.
