NATO
The conversations with the western nations ended when the foreign
ministers of 12 countries in North America and Western Europe got together in Washington, D.C. and signed the North Atlantic Treaty. The treaty stated that if any of the people that signed it was being attacked it was considered an attack on all of them so they had to defend that person. Dean Acheson signed it which was important because U.S. hasn't tied its security to nations in Europe since the 1700s. -
Red Scare
U.S. feared communists were trying to take over the world. Julius, Ethel Rosenberg and Alger Hiss caused the fear that our government was infiltrated by the communists. A committee was made to look into communist activities in the United States, HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee) looked for Soviet spies and communist sympathizers. -
Korean War
North Korea Invaded South Korea and UN sends forces of MacArthur to aid South Korea. Communist forces cause UN Forces to come close to losing and North Koreans get pushed to the border of China. China joins the war with the North Koreans and MacArthur wants an invasion in china and to use the atomic bomb. -
The Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw pact was named this because it was signed in Warsaw. The members were Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria.
The treaty said for any member to defend any member that was attacked by an enemy and it also set up a unified military command. -
Sputnik
The soviet union sent the first artificial satellite named Sputnik-1. The launch of sputnik made the arms race worse and raised cold war tensions. The sputnik beat america in the space race and now has a technological edge. -
U-2 incident
The president was anxious to avoid a nuclear attack and he was nervous so had a spy plane designed by Clarence Kelly Johnson. Col. Francis Gary Powers' flew the spy plane was destroyed over Soviet airspace. Col. Francis Powers was on a mission to fly over and take a picture of territory that no one is supposed to go on, in Russia. -
Berlin Wall
A wall built by the Government of Germany made of wire and concrete between East and West Berlin. Berlin Wall was built to keep Western fascists from entering East Germany. The Berlin Wall created many mass defections across the East to the West. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
When the Russians put nuclear missiles in Cuba. U.S. came close to being in Nuclear War with Russia. The United States put a ban on shipments going to Cuba from the Soviet Union. Russia said they would remove the missiles from Cuba if the U.S. removes theirs from Turkey. -
Space Race
Cosmonaut from Russia named Yuri Gagarin was sent into space. Soviet Union was the first nation to send a person into orbit. Kennedy made it his mission to land a man on the moon close to the end of the 1960s. On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong landed on the moon making him the first human that has been on the moon.
