    The Communist Bloc were made up of communist states including Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The Communist Bloc was aligned with the Soviet Union.
  • Harry Truman Presidency

    Truman's presidency began along with the Cold War. Truman committed the United States to the containment of Soviet expansionism in Europe.
  • Television

    Television showed the personalities of leaders, and showed the differences between democracy and communism.
  • Mafia

    The Mafia saw the revival in Italy, by taking advantage of the chaos caused by the Cold war, the Mafia by forming alliances to go against Communism. This resulted in making themselves relevant socially and politically in the new Italian Republic.
  • Red China

    China became the largest socialist state after the Sino-Soviets (1956).
  • Hydrogen Bomb

    The United States developed an H-Bomb in the face of the military and political provocations by the Soviet Union.
  • Liberace

    Liberace, a piano player, blurred social boundaries and surpassed the harsh rules that were made around gender performance during the Cold War.
  • Korean War

    North Korea invaded the South, attempting to unify under North Korea's government. But, this resulted in the two being separated until this day.
  • The Catcher In The Rye

    The book came out during the anxious time of the Cold War. It impacted the young audience because they identified the themes of alienation, innocence, and rebellion.
  • England's Got a New Queen

    Queen Elizabeth began her ruling during the early times of the Cold War.
  • Princess Grace

    Princess Grace starred in a movie, called Toko-Ri. This movie showed U.S combat pilots during the Korean War. The movie was an important representation of what the military had been doing to combat Communism.
  • Vaccine

    The vaccine against poliomyelitis was developed. This affected over 60 million people. It represented how vaccines were being made during the ongoing propaganda war.
  • Trouble in the Suez

    The Egyptian Government got control of the Suez Canal from the British and French owned company. This created conflict for the U.S. relations with the Middle Eastern countries and European allies.
  • Sputnik

    As the U.S military fell behind in developing new technology compared to the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union launching Sputnik intensified the arms race and raised the tension.
  • Elvis Presley

    Both side of the war wanting to use Elvis's popularity to their advantage, and also exploit him. Elvis also played a big role in music, bringing new music to the young audience that was going through an anxious time of the Cold War.
  • Space Monkey

    There was 2 monkeys in a Jupiter missile. The monkeys became the first two primates to survive spaceflight during a suborbital predawn flight.
  • U-2

    The U-2 caused the fall of the summit conference in Paris, between the U.S, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, and France.
  • Belgians in Congo

    Due to the failure to gain the independence of Congo, the country soon turned to chaos. It resulted in the colonial power to keep its economic and military influence in the region.
  • Birth Control

    After voters started to favor birth control, states started to legalize more drugs (diaphragms, "the pill", etc.) first approved by the Food and Drug administration.
  • Moonshot

    The moonshot brought together cultural, political, and scientific fields together. It also had a role in pushing the development of NASA along with the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo projects. These projects pushed the U.S ahead in the Space Race against the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
  • Woodstock

    The idea of Woodstock surrounded music. The thought that music could unite people and push them to take action. Woodstock was seen as a tool in political and social change.
  • Castro

    Castro allied himself with the Soviet Union, allowing them to place nuclear weapons in Cuba.Thus, resulting in the Cuban Missile Crisis
  • British Beatlemania

    The Beatles encouraged a cultural revolution in the Soviet Union that worked to get rid of Communism.
  • Richard Nixon Presidency

    Nixon visited China, and removed China has a Cold War enemy. The Nixon administration signed the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union. Before he left office, he also had the Helsinki Accords signed.
  • Foreign Debts

    The West was offering loans to the countries that turned away from Communism. In the 1970s, the debt grew from 90 billion USD to 750 billion.
  • Watergate

    The Watergate Scandal exposed the secrecy and the corruption of the government. Where before, when people would trust the government, people now started to distrust and we still see this today. The Watergate Scandal also caused Nixon to be impeached, which made him the only president to do so.
  • Russians in Afghanistan

    Russians in Afghanistan was considered to play a key role in the fall of the Soviet Union. This resulted in the end of the Cold War.
  • Crack

    Crack was famous because of the affordability and the affect it had on people. But this drug soon caused addiction, death, and drug-related crimes.
  • AIDS

    AIDS had a big impact on the gay community. This caused discrimination against the community to go on for years. AIDS was eventually called the "gay disease." Until, later on it was proved that anyone of any gender or sexuality could have AIDS.
  • Sally Ride

    Sally Ride was the first women in space. Sally encouraged women and girls to push past the gender barriers. Sally became a role model for young girls then and for future generations.
