  • Potsdam Conference

    The Potsdam Conference held in Potsdam, Germany was held to dicuss the division and reconstruction of Europe after World War II. The Soviet Union was represented by Joseph Stalin, Britain by Winston Churchill, and the United States by President Harry S. Truman.
  • Beginning of the Cold War

  • Berlin Blockade

    The Soviet Union created the Berlin Blockade, cutting off rail and road access to the capital city, which is located in the middle of the communist territory of eastern Germany.
  • Berlin Airlift

    The Berlin Airlift brought necessary supplies into the capital city of Germany by plane. The airlift had planes landing and being unloaded around the clock for nearly a year. This was caused by the Berlin Blockade.
  • Vietnam War

    During the Vietnam War, Vietnam was divided into North and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was communist while South Vietnam was capitalist.The war ended in a complete communist take over on April 30, 1975.

    The Berlin Wall was created to keep the Western (communist territory) people from entering East Germany (capitalist territory) and enjoying the socialist state, but it primarily served to split Berllin in two parts.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13-day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union over Soviet nuclear missiles deployed in Cuba. It played out on television worldwide and was the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war.

    In the 1980s, the Soviet Union had a lot of problems. The economy, especially the agricultural sector, began to fall apart. The country lacked technological advancements and used inefficient factories. This destroyed the Soviet Unions economy.
  • Fall of Communism/Soviet Union

    The Fall of Communism/Soviet Union started when representatives from 11 Soviet republics met in the Kazakh city of Alma-Ata and announced that they would no longer be part of the Soviet Union. Instead, they declared they would establish a Commonwealth of Independent States(CIS).
