    Berlin Blockade and Airlift
    An international crisis that arose from an attempt by the Soviet Union to for the U.S., UK, and France to abandon their post WWII jurisdictions in West Berlin. The Soviets in eastern Germany began a blockade of all rail, road, and water communications between Berlin and thw West. On June 29, The U.S. and Berlin began to supply the city with food and other vital supplies by air.
  • Korean War

    A war between North and South Korea,in which the United Nations force led by the U.S. fought for the South, and Chine and the Soviet Union fought for the North. The Korean War ended July 25, 1953

  • U-2 incident

    U-2 incident
    A United States U-2 spy plane was shot down while in Soviet airspace. CIA pilot Francis Gary Powers was performing aerial reconnaissance when it was hit by a surface-to-air missile and crashed in Sverdlovsk.

    A failed military invasion of Cuba undertaken by the CIA sponsored paramilitary Brigade 2506.
  • Berlin Wall

    Constructed by the German Democratic Republic starting on August 13, 1961. The wall completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding Eastern Germany and East Berlin until government officials opened it in November, 1989. Its demolition officially began June 13, 1990 and completed in 1992.
  • Iron Curtain

    A physical boundary between Eastern and Western Europe that cut off trade and contact. This was an attempt by the Soviet Union to block itself from non-soviet- controlled areas.
