  • Richard Nixon visits China

    Nixon was the first U.S president to visit the People's Republic of China since it was established in 1949.   • Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty

    Treaty between the U.S> and the U.S.S.R. limiting each side's anti-ballistic missile systems in order to prevent the deployment of nationwide ABM defenses, or a base for such a system. Each country was restricted to a single deployment area of 100 ABM launchers and missiles.   • Paris Peace Accords

  • Coup to Overthrow Chilean Government

    President Salvador Allende of Chile, the first democratically-elected Marxist head of state, died in a revolt led by army leaders.   • Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

    Russian paratroopers landed in Kabal, the capital of Afghanistan. The country was already in a civil war. On Dec. 25, 1979, Amin, the prime minister of Afghanistan, was shot by Russians and was replaced Babrak Kamal. http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/russia_invasion_afghanistan.htm
