    Richard Nixon visits China
    *First time a US president visited the People's Republic of China. Ended 25 years of seperation. They agreeded to a peaceful settlement of Taiwan's government.
  • SALT I

    SALT I
    Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (May 1969 - May 1972)
    The US and the Soviet Union negotiated the first agreements on limitation of arms. SALT I froze the number of strategic ballistic missle launchers. Countries had to limit the number of sites protected by ballistics to two. Helped improve relations.

    Anti-Ballistic Missle Treaty
    The treaty prohibits the development, testing and deployment of space-based, sea-based, air-based and mobile land-based systems and components. Compliance is monitored by national technical means of verification and overseen by a Standing Consultative Commission.
  • Paris Peace Accords

    Paris Peace Accords
    Intended to establish peace in Vietnam and end the Vietnam War. North Vietnam, South Vietnam, the United States, and other small South Vietnamese revolutionary groups signed the treaty "Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam." This ended direct U.S. military involvement.

    Coup to overthrow Chilean Government
    Prior to US intervenmtion, there was political unrest in Chile. The Chilean congress was more conservative than the socialist leader, President Salvador Allende. The US tried to limit Allende's ability to implement policies.
    Augusto Pinochet rose to power. There is no evidence that the U.S. instigated or provided material support to Pinochet's successful coup in 1973, but the Nixon administration was undoubtedly pleased with the outcome; Nixon had spoken with disappointment about the failed coup

    South Vietnam Falls to Communism
    North Vietnam moved into Saigon, South Vietnam. South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu resigned his power to Vice President Tran Van Huong (April 25), leaving the South with no leader.

    Sandinista Revolution in Nicaragua
    The conflict between the Somoza regime and the Nicaraguan people reached a crisis point in January 1978. Within Nicaragua the Sandinista victory sparked a series of uprisings. andinistas launched an all-out offensive to overthrow Somoza, calling for a popular uprising. The Organization of American States (OAS) rejected a U.S. proposal to send an international armed force to Nicaragua to restore peace.

    SALT II
    SALT II was the first nuclear arms treaty which assumed real reductions in strategic forces to 2,250 of all categories of delivery vehicles on both sides. Also banned new missle programs. Both sides obeyed until 1986 when the Reagan Administration withdrew from SALT II after accusing the Soviets of violating the pact.

    Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
    Afghanistan and Soviet signed a friendship treaty in 1978.
    Soviet paratroopers landed in the capital of Arghanistan, Kabal. Afghanistan was already at a brink of a civil war. The Soviets shot down the prime minister, Hazifullah Amin. The Soviets put Babrak Kamal in his place. This marked continuation of communist spread.
