Castro singed a peace treaty with the Soviet Union and the United States began to trade individuals to overthrow Castro. The U.S. stopped all trade with Cuba. America ended their policy of trying to resolve its differences with Castro's government through diplomacy. Cuba nationalized all US businesses. -
Vienna Summit
President Kennedy and Premier Khrushchev meet in Vienna. Khrushchev threatens a stand still over West Berlin and the military presence of the Ally forces. Khrushchev was ultimately told to back down but the summit was still a failure. Construction on the Berlin wall begins and U.S.S.R. resumes nuclear testing. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviet Union decided to station nuclear missiles in Cuba. The United States was understandably uncomfortable with Cuba having such powerful weapons within such close distance. The U.S. formed a blockade and that gave both countries a chance to come to a peaceful agreement. If Khrushchev agreed to turn the ships around the Kennedy would agree not to invade Cuba.

Malaysian Independence
The formation of the state of Malaysia resulted in an upsurge in hostility towards the UK nationals living and working in Indonesia. On this date, three Armstrong Whitworth Argosies of No 215 Squadron, together with a Handley Page Hastings of No 48 Squadron began to airlift any British citizens that wished to leave Indonesia to Singapore. About 400 passengers were flown out over the next few days. -
Khrushchev is replaced
Nikita Khrushchev is replaced by Leonid Brezhnev as the ruler of the Soviet Union. While Khrushchev coexisted with other countries, Brezhnev was more anti - America. -
US troops in Vietnam
President Lyndon B. Johnson sent 150,000 US troops to Vietnam. This was the first time that this number of American soldiers were in Vietnam. The War of Vietnam is considered a proxy war for the Cold War - meaning that though the Soviet Union wasn't directly involved in it, they were still fighting in it. This was another way that the United States fought against the Soviet Union and communism. -
France withdraws from NATO
France withdrew their troops from NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) because French General Charles de Gaulle felt that Nato was dominated by the United States and Britain and he wanted France to have more independence. This affected the Cold War because NATO helped the US fight the Soviet Union during the Cold War because their main objective was to fight against communism, and America was fighting against Russian communism. France leaving NATO hurt the US in the Cold War. -
Spy Leaks Information to the Soviet Union
In October of 1967, John A. Walker Jr. begins to sell information to the Soviet Union about the US military. Some of Walker’s documents concerned U.S. submarines. Even bigger, Walker provided a document containing information listing the following month’s settings for the American KL-47 encryption machine. This information was useful and ultimately lead to the invasion of the USS Pueblo. -
USS Pueblo Invasion
The USS Pueblo was being used to gather intelligence while on its routine surveillance of the North Korean coast. North Korea conquered the lowly armed ship. The ship and its men were claimed as a prize of war. The men were finally were released in December of 1968.
