Sino-Soviet Split
Prior to the split, both China, and the Soviet Union were the big contenders of communism in the Eurasian portion of the world. Nevertheless, as time continued on, Chinese communism and Soviet communism began to shape, and with more passing time they both began to appear as different political views. China and U.S.S.R were diverging differently from Marxist ideas, and this allowed the U.S to slide in and establish peaceful relations between it and China. -

JFK becomes president.
The youngest ever elected president at 43, JFK came onto office on January 1st, 1961. At the time, JFK's republican adversary was Richard Nixon, which had not yet been afflicted by the watergate scandals. JFK brought charisma, confidence, and life onto the presidential seat, which the U.S would so desperately need as tensions increased with the ever looming doom that could be brought by the Soviet's nuclear weapons. -
Cuban Embargo
In 1960, the U.S enacted an embargo on Cuban exports for everything except food and meds after the nationalization of American owned oil refineries without compensation, and as we know, oil always starts problems. However, due to the increasing tensions, on February 7th, 1962 the embargo was extended to everything. Presently, more and more inhabitants of both countries are starting to support the lifting of the embargo. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
In October of 1962, the world was in a constant state of fear, tension, and conviction. For 13 straight days, there was an ever approaching sign of usage of nuclear weapons. In response to the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, Nikita Krushchev agreed to Cuba's request for nuclear missiles on the island to dissolve further invaders. Krushchev and Fidel Castro came to an agreement, nevertheless, the U.S fought hard for this not to happen. And so, the U.S.S.R agreed to not give Cuba the missiles. -
Assassination of President John F. Kennedy
Pictured is the mugshot of Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassin of JFK. On November 11th, 1963, he was shot and killed as he was riding in a presidential motorcade. There is much speculation as to whether or not he worked with others, and even today is still debated. But this tragedy greatly troubled the American population, for all were in grief. The carrier of the American torch had fallen, and it was time to find another one capable of carrying. -
Gulf of Tonkin Incident
On August 2nd, 1964, in the greatest game of you shot first in history, the U.S Maddox, a U.S ship, was attacked by North Viatnemese ships, although it was on Viatnemese land. This incident gave the U.S the most perfect excuse to become more openly involved in the war. -
US sends combat troops to Vietnam
Vietnam war began in 1964, but it had started to escalate in 1965. In 1965 President Johnson had sent 175,000 combat troops to Vietnam. This caused more conflict, and the war had become more deadly. There had been many deaths in the war, but most of them were Vietnam civilians and military. There were many deaths because it had become a war of attrition. This connected with the Cold War because China and the Soviet Union had been assisting North Vietnam while the US supported South Vietnam. -
China does multiple nuclear bomb tests
China had detonated its first thermonuclear weapon. On November 27 China had fired its first nuclear armed guided missile. On December 27 China had done its fifth nuclear armed guided missiles tests. Atomic bombs had been the main weapon which had been putting fear into different nations, and the US, Soviet Union, and China had been advancing their technology making the bombs even more deadly. -
6 Day War
There was a lot of tensions rising in the Middle East between Israel and Arab countries such as Syria. The Palestinian troops were attacking Israeli citizens, so the Israelis did many counter attacks like taking down some Syrian fighter planes. Egypt had attacked Israel as well, but the end result was Israel had been victorious, and it had taken control of the West Bank, Gaza, Golan Heights, and Sinai peninsula. -

It was when the government of Czechoslovakia led by Alexzander Dubcek wanted to democratise the nation, but ended in Soviet invasion, and the removal of Alexzander Dubcek. -
Richard Nixon elected president
President Nixon was a very important figure in the Cold War. Although he was a very controversial president because of the Watergate scandal his impact on the Cold War was not forgotten. In his first term he had been able to come to a peace agreement with the Communist North Vietnam. He had made many historic visits to China and the Soviet Union reducing the tensions, helping establish formal diplomatic relations, and created treaties which limited production of nuclear weapons. -
Neil Armstrong had made it to the moon
There was a very competitive nature of the Cold War such as the atom bombs and hydrogen bombs created. The US was finding it hard to believe that the Russians were surpassing them in the "Space Race" when JFK became president, he created a plan called the Apollo program where he would send a person to the moon before his decade had ended. Although he had died in 1963 JFK was right and in 1969 Neil Armstrong had made it to the moon.
