China was in need of help once Japan invaded them, so the leader of the Nationalist Party asked Mao, a member of Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Once Mao help beat the Japenese, he turned on the Nationalist and the CCP took over, and China became communist. -
Truman Doctrine
The Truman Doctrine was a policy in which President Truman stated that we would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid. This was to help prevent their fall into the communist bloc. -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was a program to help aid Europe. America would give economic support to help rebuild the European economy. This was made to stop the spread of Communism in Europe. -
Creation of NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was an alliance treaty signed whereby the members of the organization agrees to mutal defense if an external party goes to war with them. The goal was to "keep Russians out, Americans in, and the Germans down". -

The Korean War was fought between North and South Korea. Once the Soviet Union joined North Korea, the United States joined South Korea to fight against the Soviets and spread of communism. -

The Soviet Unions launch of Sputnik started the Space Race between them and the United States. This was significant because it was the first humans successfully reached space. -

Castro came to power by overthrowing the government of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. -
Nikita Khrushchev visits the USA
Khruschchev was the first Soviet President and Head of the Communist Party to visit the United States. He visited after the death of Stalin, saying he sought "Peaceful co-existance" with the US. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs was an unsucessful military invasion of Cuba. The outcome they hoped for from the invasion, was to cause an uprising and overthrow Castro, whom declared himself as a communist and invited Soviet Union aid. -
The Berlin Wall goes up
The Berlin was was constructed as a barrier to seperate West Berlin from East Berlin, in a way to stop the spread of communism. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
The Cuban Missle Crisis was an event between the Soviet Union and Cuba on one side, and the United States on the other side. Soviet missles were placed on Cuba, facing the US, after the US's attempts at overthrowing Cuba regime. The Soviet Union and United States later came to an agreement that led to the Soviets removing their missles, and the US promising to not invade Cuba. -

The Six Day War was fought between Isreal against Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Isreal attacked Egypt, Jordan, and Syria and later took over parts of each country. -

During the Cold War, the USSR and US were in a Space Race. With the US landing a man on the moon, we stepped ahead of the Soviets in the Space Race. -

Nixon met with Mao Zedong to establish relations between the United States and the People's Rebulic of China (PRC). This was a significant shift in the Cold War because the PRC and United States are now fighting against the Soviets. -

The situation at Grenada started when the US found a developing relationship between Grenada and Cuba. The United States eventually invaded Grenada and replaced their government with one that the US accepted. -

Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev resigned from office and handed over the Soviet nuclear missle codes to the President of Russia. This signaled the end of the Cold War. -
