The pilot of the plane survived, he was working for the U.S central intelligence agency. But the U.S denied that they allowed him to fly. -

Cuban missile crisis
The Cuban missile crisis was started because the United States discovered that the Soviet union had missiles ready to launch in Cuba. This almost caused a war between the United states and the Soviet union. This stand off lasted 13 days. A war was avoided when the Soviet union agreed to remove the missiles if the U.S agreed not to invade Cuba. The United states also removed missiles that they had in Turkey -
