    Potsdam Conferance

    The Potsdam Conference started July 17 and August 2, 1945. During this meeting it was a meeting to discuss peace settlements for Europe but did not attempt to write peace treaties. Main concerns were that if the administration of the people in germany and the continuing military of Japan. Meeting to discuss the state of the world after world war two. Changed Europe to be half communist and half capitalism.
  • Korean war

    Korean war
    On June 1950 to July 1953 is when north Korea and south korea fought in the korean war. Japan controlled Korea until the end of world war which was 1939 to 1945. Japan lost and Soviet Union got the north and United States got south. United Nations security council called for an immediate cease fire. This happened because Japan took control over Korea and the cause was that the chinese joined the battle.

    The NATO was signed on May 14, 1955. NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Its a treaty signed by countries in Europe saying they are against communism and for capitalism. The countries around the soviet union withdrew from the treaty and joined communism. The end result was half of Europe was divided capitalism vs communism.

    The vietnam war was a conflict in the southeast Asia in 1954. It split half of vietnam into north and south, the North was pro communism and the south was anti communism. The U.S. came to help the south but they lost and now vietnam is full communism. 1.3 million vietnam and 58,000 U.S. soldiers died. 2 million civilians died also.

    On July 26 1956 when Egyptian President nationalized Suez Canal. This started and was provoked by the American and British made a decision not to finance Egypt’s construction. Israeli brigades invaded Egypt. They called martial zone and seizing control in the area to stop the war. Israel got no freedom and Egyptian nationalism is strengthened. But the British and France lost all influence in the middle east.

    Hungarian War

    The Hungarian uprising was popular uprising in Hungary in 1956. This was following the speech that was given by soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in which he attacked the ruling period of Joseph Stalin.Encouraged by the new freedom of debate and criticism, a rising tide of unrest and discontent in Hungary broke out into active fighting in October 1956. Soviet union invaded hungary to stop the revolution.

    In October 4, 1957 the Soviet Union launched the first satellite. The soviet union was the very first country to successfully launch a satellite into space. They were winning the Tech and weapon race with the US. That scared everyone in the US so we started to build our own satellites and improved our missiles. This started the space and weapon race between the US and Russia.

    Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev have a speech saying that the U.S., Great Britain and France have to put their military on the west side of Berlin. The people of Berlin went through a crisis and in 1961 the Berlin wall was built. They were trying to stop the flow of western power to check the growing military power in west germany.

    In October 1962 the Us and the soviet union were on a political and military standoff. The soviet union had missiles in Cuba. All of the US feared a nuclear war when the US put up a naval blockade by Cube. Finally the soviet union removed the missiles if the US promised not to invade. This event was the 13 day missile crisis.

     Glasnost and Perestroika
    The Glasnost and Perestroika lasted in the 1980s Gorbachev launched glasnost following his introduction of perestroika, a program aimed at restructuring Soviet economic and political policy. He believed in opening the political system when in the over all would be democratizing it to make it more for the people. After becoming head of the Soviet government in 1985, Gorbachev introduced the concept of perestroika. In 1988 a new parliament, the Congress of People’s Deputies, was created.
