US program to aid in rebuildin europe after WWII so countries didnt fall to communism. The goals of the program was to rebuild, remove trade barriers, modernize industry and have Europe return to being prosperous. -
Berlin Airlift
West berlin was surrounded by soviets and cut off from communication with the rest of the world. The U.S. and Great Brittan used airplanes to drop food and supplies into West Berlin. The airlift lasted for 11 months and 2,323,738 tons of supplies were dropped -
Creation of NATO
Started by the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949. The organization an alliance between all nations that signed the treaty. NATO developed military plans to defend against communist countries alliances during the korean war. -
Soviet Nuke
Soviets test their first nuclear codenames "First Lightening". With this test the Soviet Union became the second nation to successfully develop a nuclear weapon. The soviets gathered information from spies in the U.S. nuclear program to gain information on how to build nuclear weapons. -
Korean War
North Korea invaded South Korea. The U.S. And the UN struggled to contian the North. By 1951 the front lines were back to where the war had started. On 27 July 1953 a new regime in the USSR negotiations were settled and the war was over. -
US Hydrogen Bomb
The United States tests the hydrogen bomb on Eniwetok atoll in the Pacific.the US had an advantage in the nuclear arms race after Soviets detonated their first nuclear weapon in 1949. -
Warsaw Pact
Treaty between the communist states. Started by the soviet Union in retalliation to NATO allowing West Germany to join. -
Sputnik
Sputnik was the first man made sattelite to orbit earth. It marked the beginning of the space race between the U.S. and the Soviets during the Cold war. -
Vietnam War
Ho Chi Minh, a communist, established the Viet Minh in the north to get rid of the japaneese and french. After the Geneva Conference in 1954 the french abandoned the colony and the US set up a democratic government in the south. Ngo Dinh Diem was elected but was such a bad leader that he was killed by a coup in 1963. Communists in the south established th Viet Cong and used guerilla warfare to fight the south.On January 27, 1973 a cease fire was issued and the US withdrew. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
An unsuccessful invasion by 1400 Cuban exiles that were trained and supported by the U.S. The program was developed by dwight Eisenhower and set forth by John F. Kennedy. The Invasion lasted two days. 100 exiles died and the others were taken prisoners. -
Creation of berlin wall
A wall that seperated west berlin rom east germany from 1961 - 1989. It was errected by the communists during the night to keep east germans from fleeing to west berlin. -
Cuban Missle crisis
A 13 day confrontation. Russia sent nuclear missles to cuba to prevent another attempt to overthrow the cuban government. The U.S. ordered a blockade of Cuba and didn't allow any weapons in and ordered USSR to dismantle ann nuclear launch sites. They reached an agreement that the us would publicly announce not to invade cuba and the USSR would return all offensive weapons to Russia. -
The Six day war
On june 5th Isreal launched suprise attacks against egypt after a period of high tension in the region. After six days Israel had taken control of the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria. -

Collapse of Soviet Union
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics or the USSR collapsed on dec. 26, 1991. The Soviet courts passeda declaration stating that all republics were now independent. this marked the end of the Cold war.
