The Truman Doctrine
This document stated that the United States would help Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid. This doctrine was set forth by President Harry S. Truman. -
The Marshall Plan
This was the American program to aid Europe after World War II. It was to avoid the spread of Soviet communism. The goal of the United States was to remove trade barriers and make Europe prosperous again. -
Berlin Airlift
The allied aircraft logged the 100,000 flight of the Berlin airlift. The airlift began after World War II when Germany was occupied territory and Berlin was surrounded by the Soviet zone. The city was divided into four sectors controlled by Britain, France, the United States, and the Soviet Union. -
NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization constituted a system of mutual defense in response to any attack by outsiders. -
Soviets create & test nuclear bomb
At a remote site, the USSR finally tests and explodes their first atomic bomb. In order to see and observe the affects the bomb would have, they built buildings and bridges in the vacinity and placed animals in cages to see what would happen. Their explosion was close to the U.S.'s first atomic explosion. -
The Korean War
This war was fought between South Korea and North Korea.This war started when North Korea crossed the boundry and entered South Korea attacking. They advanced and within a month, captured much of South Korea, The U.S was alarmed and took South Korea's side advancing through to the Chinese border. The Chinese then stepped in on North Korea's side. They fought back and forth until 1953 when recent president, Eisenhower made a formal truce. -
Rosenberg Spy Case
Julius and Ethel were found guilty for transmitting private military information to the Soviet Union in 1951. They received the death sentence. -
Creation of the Warsaw Pact
This was a mutual defense treaty signed between eight communist states during the Cold War. This was a military treaty between Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union. -
Vietnam War
This war was fought between the northern and the southern parts of Vietnam. The north was under communism and the south was a democracy. The United States sided with the south trying to avoid communism all around the world. North Vietnam's first guerilla attacks against the South started this war. -
Soviet launch Sputnik
The succesful launch of the satellite by the Soviets. This event shocked and frightened the Americans as they did not know the Soviets were so technologically ahead. -
Nikita Khrushchev visits the USA
Nikita was the first soviet leader to visit the United States of America. He thanked Mr; Eisenhower for the invitation to visit his country. -
Bay of Pigs
Military invasion of the United States on Cuba that was unsuccessful. We were trying to overthrow the government of the Cuban dictator. 1300 exiles landed on the island, and shortly after it was evident they would lose. President Kennedy had the option of using U.S Airforce against the Cubans but decided against it. Castro's Army stopped the U.S. By the time fighting ended on the 19th, 90 exiles had died and the rest captured as prisoners. -
The Berlin Wall Goes Up
The Beren Wall went up in the middle of the night and from then on, for twenty-eight years, seperated the city of Berlin keeping the East Germans away from the West. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
This was a 13 day confrontation between the Soviet Union and Cuba, This event was the closest the world ever came to a nuclear war. JFK notified the U.S of the prescence of missiles and enacted in a naval blockade around Cuba. A nuclear war was avoided when the Soviet Union's leader offered to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S not invading Cuba. -
The Six Day War
This was fought for six days between Israel and neighboring countries of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Israel launched surprise bombs on Egypt and it's air fields. Israel had won the land war. -
US sends a man to the moon
As apart of the Apollo II Mission, Neil Armstrong became the first man to take step onto the moon. This accomplishment sent the United States in front of the Soviets in the Space Race. -
Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT)
The United States and the Soviet Union negotiated the first agreements to place limits on some of their central and most important arnments. -
US Invades Grenada
The United States invaded Grenada and put a stop to their four year socialist experiment. They were defeated with a very small number of American casualties. President Ronald Reagan's decision to take over this country was quite popular throughout the U.S. -
Berlin Wall Falls Down
East and West Berlin/Germany had been seperated for years by a brick wall, guards, and other obstacles. This day is when the two seperate countries of Germany united and came together as one, once again. -
Collapse of the Soviet Union
On this day, the Soviet Union collapsed and turned into fifteen different countries. The collapse was triumphed by the West as a victory of freedom.
