During the cold war spies were used by both sides to obtain valuable information. Gouzenko was a russian spy who fleed to canada and gave secret information in return for his saftey.18/39 suspects were arrested because of him. Gouezenko died of natural causes in canada despite many assanation attempts. -
Berlin Blockade
The blockade was an attempt by the soviet union to get the allies to give up Berlin by blockading it. The blockade lasted until may 1949.The Soviet plan failed because all the supplies were simply airlifted in.It did succed in raising tensions between the USSR and the allies. Canada and the UNited States began talks on how to defend North America. -
Internatonal Alliances: NATO
In 1949 many ddemocratic countries formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) because of fear of the Soviet Union spreading communism. This cause the rival soviets to create an alliance of their own the warsaw pact. This was an alliance between several communist countries to counter NATO. Nato and the warsaw pact were the two main alliances fighting in the cold war. -

The Suez Canal, in Egypt, was a waterway connecting the Mediterranean and Red Seas on the way to the Indian Ocean.Egyptian leaders took over the Suez Canal which meant Britain and France lose control over the region. isreali british and french soldiers attempted to regain the canal by force. canadian born lester pearson created a UN peacekeeping solution to the conflict. 800 canadian soldiers were sent with the UN detachment . Leaster Pearson was awarded the nobel peace prize for his work. -

Lester B. Pearson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957 for finding a solution to the Suez Crisis . It was a great honour for Canada and Led to him becoming the Prime Minister in 1963 -

Defcon 2 In 1962 tensions were high between soviets and the NATO. American spy planes had spotted missle installations on cuba and had identified boats carrying nuclear warheads to cuba. North America was in panic the missles were in range of u.s mainland. Eventually the boats were sent back but it is known as the highest moment of tension in the entire cold war. -
