  • Leonid Brezhnev

    Leonid Brezhnev joined the communist party in Russia and was appointed party political cheif under Khrushchev. They worked to spread communism to Moldavia. He was invited to join "politburo" due to the request of Stalin in 1952. He was the first party secretary of the communist party. month and date not accurate
  • Yalta

    The Yalta conference occured in 1945. The leaders Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt met to decide how they wanted to separate Germany among the three allies (Russia, England and USA). Around this time marks the beginning of the Cold War. The division of Germany created tension between the super powers.
  • Iron Curtain Speech

    The Iron Curtain Speech was delivered by Winston Churchill. The basic premise of his speech was his explanation of the devision of Eastern and Western Europe. The iron curtain is a symbol of the divided European countries. It is the iron curtain metaphor that symbolized the separation of countries during the cold war. It set the stage for tension and conflict in years to come.
  • Joseph McCarthy

    Through out the 1940's and 50's a senator named Joseph McCarthy started accusing and making lists of people who he believed supported communism. He publically accussed over 200 people. This was also called the Second Red Scare or McCarthyism. **month and date not accurate"
  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine was a form of American foreign policy for countries that resisted communism while simutaneously preventing the spread of it. Like the Marshall Plan, the Truman Doctrine agreed to help the countries by providing them aid economically and militarily. The countries that the United States agreed to help included Greece and Turkey.
  • Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan was proposed by the Unites States Secretary of State, George C Marshall. The Plan offered American aid to European countries under communist control. The goal was also to encourage democrtic ideals. The plan was deemed successful. The Marshall Plan connects to the Cold War because it was created to help the countries being supressed under Soviet control.
  • Berlin Airlift

    The Berlin Airlift was organized by the United States and Britian. The Airlift provided food and fuel to those being deprived/supressed in West Berlin. This event connects to the Cold War because the communist Soviets were the people behind the depravation to those living the West Berlin.
  • NATO

    NATO stands for North Atlantic Free Trade Organization. This was an alliance formed between the North American countries, (Canada, USA, and Mexico) and some countries in Europe. In total 28 countries complete the Organization. The treaty connects to the Cold War because it was created in order to prevent Soviet domination.
  • Soviets Detenate Atomic Bomb

    The Soviets detenate a bomb that destroys everything in its path. All is incinerated. The houses, building and insert animals.
  • Chinese Communist Revoilution

    Mao Zedung declared the creation of the people's republic of China. It is said that the conflict between the Unites States and the Soviet Union caused the event in China. This related to how contageous the issue over communism became and how no effort could completely stop it.

    This man was accused of being a soviet spy in 14948. He was found guilty. This is related to the paranoia that overwhelmed the Unites States during the Cold War. Everyone was suspected to be a communist. month and date not accurate

    Patrick Anthony McCarron, a senator, helped F.D.R during the cold war by proposed ideas that made sure the society in the United States maintained a sufficient amount of money during the war. He was also against communism and he inspired the McCarran Act. This act assured internal pretection of the United States from communists.     The Korean War was a conflict betweent North Korea and South Korea. The United Nations helped aid South Korea while China helped aid North Korea.     The Rosenburge Spy Case was about a husband and wife, Julius and Ethel accused of being soviet spies.It was believed that the two were leaking information about our nuclear advances. Julius had worked in the US army signal corps. The two were found guilty and recieved the death scentence

    Massive Retaliation was a strategy designed to prevent the spread of communism. The plan was to pur Russia on the brink of war by almost destroying them entirely while using nuclear weapons against them. The idea was released in s speech mate by John Foster Dulles.
  • Dien Bien Phu

    Dien Bien Phu is a city in northern Vietnam where a battle took place between the communists and a French military group. This battle was one that basically ended French influence in Vietnam. It caused United States influence to be much more prominent. The battle is relevant to the Cold War because this was European attempt to prevent the spread of communism.
  • Warsaw Pact

    This was the treaty between Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland and the Soviet Union. It is sometimes referred to as the "Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance". Soviets used the pact to manipulate and take advantage.

    The Vietnam war wa caused through the attempt to stop the spread of communism. It was the United States and help of the South Vietnamese against the Northern Vietnamese.     A serious of artificial sattelites created by the Soviet Union. They were the first to be placed into orbit. This event connects to the Cold War because it is apart of the Space Race, yet another competition between the Soviet Union and the United States.
  • Space Race

    The Space Race was a competition between the Unites States and the Soviet Union over which country would get to space first. The first instance of success in space was the Soviet Unions launch of Sputnik, a satellite. The Space Race ended with the United States launching the first man on the moon, Niel Armstrong. The Space Race connects to the cold war because it was another advancement that the United States and the Soviet Union competed for.
  • Neutron Bomb

    This bomb was designed to annialate people but not much within the surrounding area. This means that the objects and buildings would still be in tact. The explosion would be smaller but the impact of radiation would be larger.
  • Fidel Castro

    Fidel Castro became the dictator of Cuba and established a Marxist/Socialist government. This related to the spread of communism during the Cold War.
  • USS Scorpian

    The submarine specialized in nuclear warfare but was lost shortly after being released. The ship was eventually found and it is believed that a malfunction of the torpedo was the ships destruction. The ship sunk but was found in dismembered.
  • U-2 Spy Plane Affair

    Francis Garry Powers was killed in a plane crash. He was the piolate of a U-2 airplane. There is suspicions related to the actual cause of the plane crash. It is believed by some the he was shot down by the Soviets. Some believe it may have been a technical issue. The crash related to the cold war because the Americans were spying on the Soviets to acquire information on the Soviet's developmental progress on nuclear weapons.
  • Mutually Assured Destruction

    "Whoever shoots first dies second". It aknowleged nuclear "parity". This was yet another strategic attempt in the Cold War during the end of the Kennedy ministration. It was said to assure the security of peace. Could not find actual date, Year is accurate
  • Bay of Pigs

    The Bay of Pigs was JFK's failed attempt to overthrow the Cuban government led by Fidel Castro. The plan to invade was thwarted by Castro's own army who stopped the troops sent by JFK. This related to the cold war due to our attempt at terminating communist leadership.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    This event was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. The Soviet Union planted missiles in Cuba that if lanuched would land in the United States. President Kennedy ordered their removal or else he would invade Cuba. The weapons were dismantled.
  • Hotline

    The hotline was created so the United States and Russia could communicate quickly in order to prevent delayed information. This relates to the cold war for despire our conflict the the Soviets, it was crucial that information be recieved on time so misinterpretations would not occurr.
  • Nuclear Test Ban Treaty

    The treaty was signed by the United States, United Kingdom and the Soviet Union. The agreement was to stop the nuclear testing in the atmosphere, outer space and under water. This contributed to the digression of the arms race.
  • Golf of Tonkin Resolution

    After United States ships were attacked by the Vietnamese in the Gulf of Tonkin, the resolution statement was released permitting any action necessary in order to protect the United States from attack by the Vietnamese. This event relates to the growing conflict between the USA and Vietnam caused by the United States' attempts to stop the spread of communism in the country.
  • Indonesian Coup

    Workers and peasants were slaughtered by an army coup led by general Suharto. This man formed a dictatorship. Those suspected of supporting communism were killed.     The war was initiatied by Israeli's Defence Minister. The war was between Syria, Jordan and Egypt. The United Nations went to the Suez region but the Isreali's wanted them out. The Israel's won the Six Day War. This event connects to the growing conflicts within the middle east.
  • USS Liberty

    A navy intellegence ship was attacked by air and naval forces in Israel. They claimed that they had no knowledge the ship was American.
  • Tet offense

    This event caused the necessety for the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War. The Tet Offense was a surprise attack initiated by a rebel group in Vietnam. This relates to the U.S involvement in Vietnam during the Cold War and the attempt to gain peace through violence.
  • Prague Spring Rebellion

    This is the event in which the Soviet's take over Czechoslovakia for normalization purposes. The Soviets initiated the invation for fear of losing the country all together. They wanted to crush the rebellion occurring within that country. This event connects to the United Nation and U.S concern that the Soviets would try to take over the World.
  • Brezhnev Doctrine

    Soviet leader, Leonid Brezhnev made a speech at the Fifth Congress Polish United Worker's Party reiterating the new foriegn policy of the USSR. This related to the spread of communism in Poland and the infectious effect communism had during the Cold War.
  • Vietnamization

    Nixon wanted to encourage native Southern Vietnamese people tp fight in the war against Nothern Vietnamese and take mor responsibilty in their battle against communism.
  • Detente

    Detente was a relaxation of foreign affairs during the Cold War.

  • SALT

    SALT stands for Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty. The treaty was designed to contain the arms race particularly between the USSR and the United States. The goal was to achieve a supression of weapons use.
  • Cambodia and Khumer Rouge

    The communist part of Kampuchea took over Cambodia. The communist group brought violence and inhumanity to the victims of the overthrow.
  • Helsinki Accords

    This recognized the borders of Europe pre-World War and declared that the borders go back to thier original positions. Because of this the concepts of human rights, freedom and individuality were relevant again. Supression of the people was no longer encouraged or made easy.
  • Afganistan War

    This war was over a conflict between the anti-communist muslim Afghan guerillas name Mujahidin and the Afghan/Soviet forces. The war left Afghanistan in roguh shape politically and economically.   • John Walker

    John Walker had a criminal past but to avoid jail signed up for the navy. He moved up in rank and eventually collaberated with the soviet union so he could be a spy. The United States did not recognize the turn coat for twenty years. date not accurate, 1980's is when he was caught

    Solidarity was an independent trade union formed in response to communist parties raising the prices of goods. The solidarity movement was initiated by the Polish.
  • Perestroika and Glasnost

    Perestrioka means revolution and glasnost means openness. The words were used by Mikhail Gorbachev to describe his expectations for new renovations in Russia. Gorbachev started to build democracy in Russia post Cold War while using these terms. month and day not accurate
  • INF Treaty

    This treaty was between the USA and the Soviet Union. The agreement to eliminate intermediate and short range missles. The plan was concocted by President Ronald Regan and Gorbachev.
  • Berlin Wall

    The Berlin Wall divided West and East Germany, or democracy and communism during the Cold War. The wall was built on August 13th 1961 and fell November 9th, 1989. The Soviet's had control over East Germany while the United States, Great Britain and the French.
  • German Reunification

    After the fall of the Berlin was East and West Germany were reunited and immediately a democratic form of goverment was put together.
