Yalta Conference
The Yalta Conference was a meeting for the head of the powers: British prime minister Winston Churchill, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The meeting was held to come to an agreement on what was to happen in Germany as World War II began dying down. Another meeting was held in San Francisco to establish that Germany was to have free elections. American critics accused Roosevelt of selling out to the Soviets when Stalin broke his Free Election Promise. -
United Nations
Made after World War II to replace the "League of Nations", the United Nations is a international organization that aims to raise and alleviate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, civil rights, civil liberties, political freedoms, democracy, and the achievement of lasting world peace. At it's founding it had 51 member states; as of 2011, there are 193. -
Truman Doctrine
President Harry S. Truman made a speech and declared that the United States would support Greece and Turkey during their fight with the Soviets to keep them from falling to them. President Truman stated that the Doctrine was "to support free people who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures." -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was set in motion to try to persaude Western Europe to go pro-democracy. The Marshall Plan was economic assistance for Europe to help rebuild after World War II damages cause by the U.S. Soviets were angry by this plan however and split Germany into two and did not let anyone go across. The wall that seperated the country is know as the Berlin Wall. -
Berlin Airlift
The Berlin airlift was a way to supply the people in Eastern Germany with aid through the air when Soviets attemped to keep Allies out by closing all highways, railroads, and canals. -
NATO Pact
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was made up of the United States and 11 other countries. Their goal was to try and contain any communist aggression against Western Europe. NATO stood as the main U.S.-led alliance throughout the Cold War.
