  • Castro's land reform law

    Main points of law:
    -Large estate hand over property to state in exchange for financial compensation for many years
    -All farms over 3333 acres and private estates over 1000 acres to be redistributed by new state agency
    -Foreigners cannot own sugar plantations
  • Cuban sugar quota reduced

    USA reduced the quota from 3million tonnes to 700 thousand tonnes. USSR and China stepped in and offer to buy the surplus sugar.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Invasion plan by Eisenhower (then President) decided in March 1960 which was continued by Kennedy. Invasion is an attempt to remove Castro from power and severed all diplomatic relations with Cuba.
  • Operation Mongoose

    Attempt by the USA to destroy Cuba’s economy and Castro after the Bay of Pigs invasion failed.
    A secret operation which include operations like sabotaging important Cuban industries and assassaination attempts on key Cuban political leaders (e.g. Castro).
  • Cuba alliance with Soviet

    Cuba was convinced that invasion by USA was inevitable after Bay of Pigs invasion and hence Cuba start to look for ally (Soviet Union). Castro declared himself 'Marxist-Leninist' and established new communist party in Cuba.

    -Boost Cuba's defence
    -Presence of missiles help deter any potential invasion
    -Use Cuba as bargaining chips for more concessions
    -Narrow the 'missile gaps' as Soviet finally have missiles at the backyard of USA

  • Kennedy meet with Soviet's Foreign Minister

    Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko asserts that Soviet is only helping Cuba in their defence and that it does not represent a threat to USA. Kennedy however, did not mention anything about his knowledge of the missiles present in Cuba.
  • Kennedy's speech

    Kennedy's speech goes out to the USA that missiles have been discovered in Cuba. Kennedy's speech mention about the Berlin Blockade which is a way of attacking the USSR by telling the world that USA would not repreat what USSR did to Berlin. It puts USA in a positive light in the world.
  • Khruschev response to Kennedy's blockade

    Khruschev condemned the blockade and wrote letter to Castro assuring him that USSR support for Cuba will not waiver
  • Khruschev first offer to Kennedy

    There is no need for USSR missiles and USSR will be willing to remove the missiles if US promise not to invade Cuba. It is a PRIVATE letter sent to Kennedy.
  • Khruschev second offer to Kennedy

    USSR demand Turkish missiles to be removed from Cuba. The letter is NOT a PRIVATE letter. Whole world knows about it, Cuba ignored and continue to prepare for war. Kennedy was shocked by the deal.
  • U2-spyplane shot down by USSR in Cuba

    Soviet in Cuba strictly prohibited to use missiles without permission. One USSR commander accidentally shot down the USA spyplane. USA sees it as an act of starting the war. Cuba is no longer involved and has no power in the talk anymore.
  • Kennedy agreed to Khruschev second offer

    Kennedy was worried of the rising conflict, hence agree. Turkey disagree as it sees as compromising to their defence. World don’t know about the secret deal, only know Khruschev odered missiles to be placed there then remove it again from Cuba.
  • Soviet Missiles withdraw from Cuba

    Seem like USSR just back down from their agressiveness and make them look weak
