Clean Water Issue: A Need for Change 6 sources for Project 2 and their connection to one another

This timeline was created in order to better understand the topic of the clean water issue as well as develop a historical perspective.
The clean water issue is both a national and global problem. It is affecting the quality of life for millions of people. Lots of research on the human right to water, environmental rights, and water technology has been completed in order to better understand the severity of the issue and changes that need to be made.
  • World water dynamics: global modeling of water resources by, Slobodon Simonovic

Simonovic explains the WorldWater model and introduces the relationship between future industrial growth and world water resources. The issues of water scarcity, water pollution, and water access are all future global issues as well as current ones. This article connects to another article called "Human Right to Water: Contemporary Challenges and Contours of a Global Debate" by, Oriol Mirosa and Leila Harris because it focuses on the need of access especially in vulnerable populations.

  • UCLA develops ‘smart’ water desalination system by, Yoram Cohen

UCLA is developing a water desalination system to help accelerate water technology development. The system tests water sources for chemicals, pH, salinity, and other factors which affect appropriate water for consumption. This article connects to "A critical review of water purification technology appropriate for developing countries: Northern Ghana as a case study" by, Michelle Thompson because it focuses on water technology which can be adopted and used to lessen the clean water issue.
  • Human Right to Water: Contemporary Challenges and Contours of a Global Debate by, Oriol Mirosa and Leila M. Harris

The main idea of this article is to explore the human right to water. The authors also respond to recent critiques on the debate of limited access and attempts to give reasons as to why it is limited. There has been a challenge in understanding how important the human right to water is and how there needs to be more access to vulnerable populations.
This article relates to the one by Hiskes because it focuses on the environmental human rights of the clean water issue and how significant it is.
  • A critical review of water purification technology appropriate for developing countries: Northern Ghana as a case study by, Michelle Thompson

Not all of the technologies are suitable for every region in need of water purification, and this is a focus in this article. Thompson states that “In Ghana, over half of the population lives in rural areas ... lack access to safe drinking water”. This calls for advancement in technology so that potable water is available in the regions that have limited access.
This article connects to the article by Blake because unsafe water can affect physical health and health outcomes.
  • Spatial Relationships among Dairy Farms, Drinking Water Quality, and Maternal-Child Health Outcomes in the San Joaquin Valley by, Sarah Brown Blake

Blake mentions that clean and affordable water is a “significant public health issue”.The point of this research was to establish geographic relationships among nitrate levels in water, low birth weight, and socioeconomic data.
This article relates to both the articles by Hiskes and Simonovic because it gives specific examples of how unsafe water is against environment human rights and is both a national and global issue.
