Claude Monet was born in Paris, France. The second son of Adolphe and Louise-Justine Monet. Born Oscar Claude Monet, but later dropped the Oscar (Waldron 9). -
YMCA Is Founded
When George Williams founded the YMCA (Young Mans Christan Association) in England in 1844, it was a place for men to go after work and a way to keep young men out of trouble. Left For Paris
Monet requested a grant from the Le Havre City Council to study in Paris with Eugène Boudin. By the time the council denied his grant in May of 1859, Monet had already left. His father ordered him to come home and refused to give him any more money until he did. Monet stayed in Paris with 2,000 francs saying he would make more money off of his art (Waldron 12,15). -
Charles Darwin Publishes "The Origin of Species"
Commonly reffered to as "the book that shook the world," The Origin of Species introduced a new era in our thinking about the nature of man.This book had a greater impact on man's concept of himself and the world than Newton and other brilliant scientists. Every modern discussion of man's future, purpose of man and the universe, and man's place in nature is based on Darwin (What Is the Significance of On the Origin of Species?). -
Military Service
Monet's art was interrupted by military service in Algeria from 1860-1862 (Belz 469). -
American Civil War Begins
Although it was a hard time for America, the Civil War had positive effects. As well as destroying slavery from the country, the Civil War paved the way for Civil Rights legislation. Also, the war established Lincoln as one of the important figures in U.S. and world history and established an American military tradition of Memorial Day (About the Importance of the Civil War). -
First Son is Born
Claude Monet had his first son with Camille Doncieux three years before they were married. They named their son Jean-Armand-Claude Monet (Waldron 37). -
U.S. Purchases Alaska From Russia
Immediately after purchasing Alaska for $7.2 million there were positive effects for the United States. This purchase ended Russia's presence in North America and ensured U.S. access to the Pacific northern rim. Alaska continued to have positive effects when in 1896 miners discovered a major gold deposit in the Yukon (Purchase of Alaska). -
Married Camille
In 1870, Claude Monet and Camille Doncieux got married. This was Monet's first wife, and they already had a son of three years (Belz 469). -
Creation of "Impressionists"
In 1872, Monet painted a picture which he called "Impression: Sunrise." This painting inspired a newspaper critic to call all of the artists in a group that Monet regularly exhibited his art "impressionists." Impressionism was Claude Monet's main style of art, so this was a momentous occasion in his lifetime (Tyle 1322). -
Second Son is Born
Claude and Camille had their second son eleven years after their first. They named their son Michel Monet, and although Claude was away for his art, he came home to see his wife and kids for a few days after his birth. However, Camille's health was in poor condition (Waldron 57). -
Camille Dies
In the year after giving birth to her second son, Camille passed away. Many years of poor health led up to this (Belz 471). -
Thomas Edison Invents First Practical Electric Light
Although Edison did not invent the light bulb, he made it more practical. Electric lights at the time were unreliable, expensive, and short lived, but Edison invented a bulb that lasted many hours. This improvement led to other improvements until the light bulb was cheap and reliable. He then went on to invent the entire electric utility system to power these light bulbs (Thomas Edison's Light Bulb). -
Marries Alice Hoschedé
Claude Monet and Alice Hoschedé were living together with their kids even before Camille's death. Claude proposed to Alice while her husband, Ernest Hoschedé, was still alive. Alice waited until Ernest's death in 1891 to agree to his proposal and they were married later that year (Claude Monet: The Alice Hoschedé Years and On). -
World War One
Although there were many casualties during WW1, it had some positive effects. Airplanes were used for only about 10 years before the war, but when it was finished they were capable of flights and speeds much higher than ever before. Also tanks and fully automatic rifles were introduced and an entire new system of warfare created along with them. WW1 also changed America's government perspective. Before the war they generally stayed away from foreign affairs, but by the end the foreign affairs... -
