  • NAACP

    NAACP
    The NAACP is a civil rights group founded in 1909 to fight racial injustices. It's most famous case was the win in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, forcing the desegregation of schools in the southern states.

    This ended segregation in public schools and gave civil rights activists courage and hope for a better future. This decision overturned the Plessy v Ferguson decision.
  • The Rosa Parks

    The Rosa Parks
    On this date, Rosa Parks refused to be sent to the back of the bus, and was one of many activists advocating for equality. She became an icon for all activists and helped form many civil rights groups and protests.
  • Greensboro Sit-ins

    Greensboro Sit-ins
    Four college students went into a white-only cafe to order coffee. They stayed there until closing time after they were denied service. THis sparked similar rotests in the surrounding states.
  • Dorothy Cotton

    Dorothy Cotton
    Dorothy was a leader of the African- American CIvil RIghts movement and was a head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. She was the highest ranked member of the SCLC. She also helped organize the Birmingham movement and Children's Crusade.
  • Malcolm X

    Malcolm X
    Born in 1925, Malcolm X was an active leader in the black community and was the head spokesman of the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X worked for equality for blacks and believed that non-violent actions and integration were not the solution for blacks. Malcolm X was assassinated in 1965, shortly after he left the Nation of Islam.

    James L. Farmer Jr.
    A civil rights activist and leader of the American Civil RIghts Movement. Farmer was involved in the 1961 Free Ride movement, which led to the desegregation of transportation systems.

    Freedom Riders
    Formed of seven African-Americans andsix whites, this groupd went into the heart of the South, attempting to stop segregation. This group had their bus firebombed and attacked by the Ku Klux Klan while in Alabama.

    In this movement, the SCLC attempted to desegregate Albany, Gerogia. This campaign, run by MLK, was a failure because of the local police chief in Albany, Laurie Pritchett.

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    This act was put in place to outlaw major forms of discrimination against all African Americans including segregation. This ended voter registration requirements.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    This act outlawed discriminatory practices. These practices were responsible for widespread disenfranchisement.
  • The Black Panthers

    The Black  Panthers
    An African- American leftist that began in 1966. They were known for setting forth a doctrine attempting to protect African- American neighborhoods from police brutality. Also created the Ten Point Prgoram listing demands for African- Americans.
