The Old Kingdom was an age in Egypt where pharaohs were at their peak of respect and praise. They, along with their nobles, were destined to have access to the afterlife as reflected through the pyramids built in their worship. The belief in the afterlife isn't a new belief at this age, but one could argue Egyptians were the strongest to believe this.

Sumer, a city-state in Mesopotamia, was suffering from several ecological problems that interfered with their agriculture. This included deforestation, soil erosion, and salinization of soil. This made Sumer very weak as well as prone to intruders.
