Free-Soil Party
The Free-Soil party took a clear position on anti-slavery and was created by Northernes as a way to help Zachary Taylor, a Mexican War hero, win the election. -
Zachary Taylor is elected President
With help from the Free-Soil Party Zachary got an extra 10% of the popular vote and won the election. -
California enters as Free State
Because of the Gold Rush the population of California sky-rocketed and eventually skipped right into becoming a state. The only problem with this is that the people in California didn't want to be a slave state so soon came the Compromise of 1850. -
