Josiah was wounded during the battle of Stones River in Tennessee. He was taken to General Hospital in Nasheville to recover, and later ended up working there during the rest of the war as a doctor.

The Union drove the Rebels to Buzzard's Roost, a very strong position, where they are making a stand. He heard rumors in his hospital that said that Sherman (William T. Sherman) was flanking the right and left, and that the rebels would have to fight their way through them.

71st Ohio went up the river to Carthage
A good amount of Josiah's friends were in the 71st Ohio. So, he got to have a chat with them and make up for the lost time. All of his friends were doing fine.

Christmas came and the soldiers are all writing letters about how they wish they could be with the people they loved. And wishing that they could come back to celebrate New Years with them.
