The Beginning of the Civil War

Enlistment
Newton Scott enlisted into the Union Army in Albia, Iowa. He enlisted not long after Lincoln called for war. He enlisted after he saw an union recruitment poster. -
Camp Lincoln Keokuk, Iowa
Newton Scott writes to his best friend Hannah M. Cone (who he will later marry) that she would be horrifically saddened by all of the sick and dying soldiers. He then said he would not leave this army till this rebellion was defeated. -

They got on the boats in the background and waited for the other companies before they could begin their voyage. They were on a part of the Vicksburg Campaign. -
Stalemate At Fort Pemberton
As the Union Army went through the Yazoo Pass the Confederate Army went up through the pass to stop the Union to getting into the Southern territory. The battle lasted for four days. Niether army won because both retreated. The Union Army lost few soldiers and some were injured. -
Helena, Arkansas
Scott and fellow soldiers burn the city to the ground in attempt to stop the rebels from shooting at them. -
Camp
Both armies retreated back to their camps after the battle since no one won. It took about a month to officially get all of the soldiers out of there. -
Fight for Port Gibson
The Battle of Port Gibson resulted in leaving Vicksburg wide open. The Cofederate Army could not come close to defeating the unio and were defeated. The Rebels had to retreat, but had set up new defense positions during the day. -
Battle of Raymond
As the Union was marching south the Rebels had started attacking once they marched into Raymond. when the Union creeped closer the rebels opened fire. Some Union troops died, but the Union had more forces coming and Confedarate Army couldn't hold back any longer. The Union won -
Battle of Champion Hill
The Battle of Champion Hill allowed for the Union to capture the crossroads, which helpd them control this part of the Southern territory. Who ever controls the roads or railroads has control of that territory. The Union marched up the hill and the battle advanced on. The Union won the battle and the crossroads. -
Promotion
Newton Scott is promoted to 8th Corporal. -
Battle of Helena
Newton Scott participated in the Battle of Vicksburg, but was transferred in the beginning to Helena, Arkansas. He stayed here until the Confederat Forces arrived. With the capture of helena, Little rock could be easily take . The Union won. -
Second promotion
He is promoted to 7th Corporal -
Little Rock, Arkansas
The capture of Little Rock was very important for the Union. It helped them capture Arkansas and put a force of authority that supports Lincoln's ways. -
War ended
On this date Gen. Lee surrenders and President Lincoln reunited the nation. -
More Promotions
He is promoted to 5th Corporal, then later he is promoted to 4th corporal. -
Only a year left
He wrote a letter to Hannah Cone about he had only a year of service left in the army. -
Last Promotion
Scott's regiment starts the construction of the St. Charles, Arkansas barracks and was promoted to 3rd corporal. -
Dicharged
Newton Scott was honorably discharged and returned home.
