David Farragut moved up the Mississippi and captured New Orleans, which was the South's most popular seaport. -
Second Battle of Bull Run
The Second Battle of Bull Run commences. Union commander John Pope retreats from Confederate General Stonewall Jackson. -
The Battle of Antietam
The bloodest battle in the Civil War takes place at Antietam, resulting in the deaths of 26000 men. -
Emancipation Proclimation
President Lincoln issues the final Emancipation Proclimation, freeing all of the slaves in territory controled by the Union. -
The Battle of Chancellorsville
The Union army is defeated by the much smaller Confederate forces, resulting in the loss of hope for Union commander Joe Hooker. -
Stonewall Jackson Dies
The death of Stonewall Jackson occurs when he is shot by his own men a few days later and dies from his wounds. -
The Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg begins and by the end it results in the deaths of thousands of soldiers. The result of the battle was a Union victory and the day the wars tide turned. -
U.S. Grant Promoted
"Unconditional Surrender" Grant was promoted to the commander of all Union forces in the Western part of the country. -
The Battle of Cold Harbor
General Grant loses a massive amount of men, about 7000, in only 20 minutes. Resulting in the last clear victory for Robert E. Lee. -
The Siege of Petersburg
General Grant surrounds Lee's forces in Petersburg which would result in a nine month siege of the town. -
Lincoln is Re-elected
Abraham Lincoln defeats his former general George McClellan and is re-elected as the presidents of the United States. -
March to the Sea Begins
General Sherman of the Union army begins his march to the sea with 62,000 men. -
The March to the Sea ends.
Sherman finally reaches Savannah Georgia and leaves a 300 mile long path of destruction behind him. He offers Savannah to Lincoln as a Christmas present. -
13th Amendment Added
The U.S. Congress voted on the passing of the 13th amendment to the Constitution of the United States. The amendment passed and slaves were now free. -
Peace Talks Fail
Lincoln met with Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens to discuss peace between the two sides. However, this ended in failure and the fighting continued. -
Richmond is Captured
General Grant breaks Lee's line of defense and begins to close in on Richmond. By the next day, it is captured and the Union flag is raised above the city. -
General Lee Surrenders
General Lee surrendered his army to the Union forces and General Grant at Appomattox Court House . The Civil War is basically over. -
Lincoln is Shot
President Lincoln is shot in the back of the head by John Wilkes Booth at Fords Theater. He dies the next morning from his wound.
