Civil War Timeline

  • Start of the War

    After seceding from the union do to lincoln's election confederates fired on and captured the union held Fort Sumter in south carolina this event triggered the start of the civil war.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    It was the first battle of the Civil War when Lincoln had ordered forces to go to Virginia. This lost shocked Lincoln and made him realize that the South was going to be a big force.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The Battle of Antietam had the most casualties of the war. With about 31% of the confederate army and 25% of the Union army dead.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation is a paper that freed all slaves in the confederacy. This meant that slaves were safe in the north but that doesnt mean they were not segregated and discriminated.
  • Formation of the 54th Mass.

    The 54th Mass. was a group of all black regiments that had helped in the attack of Fort Wagner in South Carolina. Past slaves were proud to be serving with the north but were still put into the worst conditions like being the front lines which was most often where alot of people had died.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    The battle of Gettysburg was a major win for the North. It was the "turning point" of the war. After this battle the north started to win battle after battle eventually leading to the end of the war.
  • Defeat of Vicksburg

    The North's win at Vicksburg really shows how well their technique is working. The anaconda plan comes in hand here as it captures the Mississippi river which cut off the south from trading, getting help, or supplies.
  • New York City Draft Riots

    The New York City Draft Riots were riots that had happened because of draft week. Draft week was a time which the army made you put your name in a raffle and you could have been selected to go fight anytime and anywhere.
  • Gettysburg Address

    The Gettysburg Address was Lincoln's way of saying that the end of the war is near and that this is their final stretch.That meant that the deaths that had happened to get to the position in which they are shouldn't be in vain.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    This is where Sherman which is Lincoln's Last hope leads a march to get Lee. At this point he calls out for total war which meant they would destroy anything and anyone that had crossed their paths.
  • Congress passes the 13th Amendment

    The 13th amendment was a law that was meant to end slavery everywhere. It abolished slavery, prohibited involuntary servitude, and nullified the 3/5 compromise.
  • Creation of Freedman’s Bureau

    The Freedman's bureau was supposed to help former slaves return to society. They did things like reunite slave families, educate slaves, and sets up schools for former slaves.
  • ​Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

    The Appomattox Courthouse was where Grant had arranged a meeting for Lee's surrender. Grant along with lincoln was just trying to end the war. He saw no need in punishing the states and offered generous terms of surrender to Lee.
  • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    LIncoln was shot in the head while at a play at Ford's Theater. John Wilkes Booth was the murderer. Even after Booth had killed Lincoln he had still managed to get away. But eventually he was caught and killed a few days later.
  • 14th Amendment

    The 14th amendment said that all people born in the U.S. were citizens and had the same rights. They all had equal protection and it said that black people could vote too.
  • 15th Amendment

    The 15th amendment let the former slaves from the south's attempt at restricting their voting rights. It said that citizens cannot be stopped from voting on account of race or color.
  • End of Reconstruction

    President Hayes withdrew the last federal troops from the south in 1877. Then ended reconstruction and the fight for racial equality which leads to the Civil Rights Movement .
  • Supreme Court Case Plessy vs Ferguson

    This was a case in which Ferguson was sueing the supreme court because he felt it had been unconstitutional. And he set a big example for people like former slaves and that they have rights and should fight for them.
