  • South Carolina secedes from the Union

    South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union after the election. The legislature saw his opposition to slavery and perceived it as a threat. During a state convention, delegates voted to remove the state of South Carolina from the Union. This would eventually lead to many more states doing the same.
  • Shots fired at Ft. Sumter

    Abraham Lincoln would not accept the secession of South Carolina. On account of this, the Confederate leaders ordered an attack. The shots fired then, were at Fort Sumter and are seen as the start of the Civil War.
  • Battle of Bull Run

    This battle was the first major battle of the civil war. The end result of the battle was a Confederate victory.
  • Monitor v Merrimack

    This battle was the first to be between ironclad ships. It was part of a Confederate effort to break the Union's blockade of Southern ports. The battle ended in a stalemate
  • Battle of Shiloh

    The Battle of Shiloh took place in Southern Tennessee. It was led by Gen. Ulysses S Grant’s army. The battle ended up being a Union victory.
  • Battle of Antietam

    This was the bloodiest day of the Civil War. About 23,000 men died. This war was a Union Victory.

    The emancipation proclamation, issued by Abraham Lincoln states that all persons held as slaves between the rebellious states shall be free. This was a huge turning point. It paved the way for the permanent abolition of slavery permanently. It also had a huge negative impact on the cost of labor and agricultural production in the South.

    This war was a very pivotal day in the Civil War. This battle lasted for three days. It marked the end of the Confederacy.

    This is one of the most important speeches of the Civil War. This speech was delivered by Abraham Lincoln. His words gave hope to everyone. It was a dedication of a national cemetery on the site of the battle of Gettysburg.
  • Ft Pillow Massacre

    This battle happened in Ft Pillow, Tennessee. Confederates killed 200 black troops fighting for the Union. This stemmed from the Southern outrage at the North’s use of black soldiers during the Civil War.
  • Sherman’s March to the Sea

    Sherman's march to Sea was a military campaign, led by Union General William, consisting of about 60,000 soldiers. This march was to go through opposing towns in Georgia with the aim to cause them to give up their Confederate cause. They stole food and livestock and burned the houses and barns of those who tried to fight back.

    General Lee surrenders to Union Gen. Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse to prevent unnecessary destruction to the South.
