SC Seceded
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. This was the beginning of the Confederacy being formed.The vote to secede was 169-0. -
More States Secede

Lincoln Inaugurated

Abraham Lincoln officially became the 16th president of the United States of America. He gave his inauguration speech. He extended an olive branch to the South states, but made it clear that he would enforce federal laws in those states as well as all others. -
Union Blockade
President Lincoln announced that there would be a Union Blockade to have the Union Navy attempt to block supplies from getting to the Confederacy. -
Battle of Bull Run
This was the first major battle that took place on land. This war was near Manassas, Virginia. The goal of this battle was to capture the capital city of Richmond, Virginia. The Union started out strong, but eventually fled. -

Emancipation Proclamation

President Abraham Lincoln gave the executive order to free slaves. This did not actually free all of the slaves. It only freed about 50,000 of the 4 million slaves in America. It also only applied to the Confederate states. -
Battle of Gettysburg
This is often noted as the turning point of The Civil War. Up until this battle, the Confederacy had been winning most of the battles. At the Battle of Gettysburg the Union won and this marked the turning point. This was near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. -
Sherman Captures Atlanta
General Sherman and his troops capture Atlanta, Georgia. Later that year he would continue on to capture Savannah, Georgia. This would be known as Sherman's March to the Sea, where he burned down and destroyed the land and the homes that they marched through. Watch this video of a kid like you explaining the Civil War. General Lee Surrenders
On April 9, 1865 General Robert E. Lee, leader of the Confederate Army, surrendered to the Union. This took place at The Appomattox Court House in Virginia. This ended The Civil War.
