  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The North and South had multiple heated debates over slavery in the states. Henry Clay settles the debate saying that Maine would be a free state and Arkansas would be slave.
  • The Nullification Crisis

    The Nullification Crisis
    States in the South didn't like tariffs because they thought that the tariffs were only supporting the Northern States. Vice President Calhoun stated that the states could nullify a federal law if necessary. South Carolina argued that they had the right to nullify it, but the federal government denied it and South Carolina threatened to secede. Henry Clay then came up with a compromise to lower the tariff.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    This compromise was created by Henry Clay to settle the debates over the new territories gained being admitted as either slave or free states. Henry decided that California would be a free state and Congress wouldn't pass laws banning slavery from the other territories.
  • Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

    Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
    This act was passed by Congress that allowed African Americans to be captured who fled to the North. This was a main cause that started the Civil War.
  • Bleeding Kansas 1855

    Bleeding Kansas 1855
    People that supported slavery in Missouri came and illegally voted for pro slavery representatives. This angered the anti slavery opponents, causing them to create their own government. The pro slavery forces attacked the anti slavery government, leading John Brown to murder several pro slavery people.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave that sued for his freedom, but the judge simply stated that he was property and could not be taken from his owner without due process of law.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    Attack on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown wanted all of the slaves to fight for their freedom so he planned to capture the arsenal to arm slaves. However, his plan failed and he and his men were captured. John was later killed.
  • The Election of 1860

    The Election of 1860
    Abraham Lincoln won the election, causing South states to begin to secede from the Union.
