Fort Sumter
After seceding from the Union due to Lincoln's election, Confederates fired and captured the Union held Sumter in South Carolina. This event triggered the start of the Civil War. -
First Battle of Bull Run
Lincoln orders an invasion of Virginia, planning to take the rebel capitol of Richmond. Union forces and Confederate soldiers clash near Manassas, VA. This battle show Lincoln that the South aren't just rebelling, and so Lincoln needs to take them serious and send in 500,000 soldiers for 3 years. -
Battle of Antietam
The Union went on the attack on September 17, 1862, at Antietam Creek. They fought all day and no one won, causing one to flee. Resulting in the single bloodiest day in all of American history. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that freed all slaves in states in rebellion - the Confederacy, it was allowed as a military action. -
Battle of Gettysburg
Union and Confederate troops fought for three days on rocky hills and fields around Gettysburg. Union won and about 51,000 people die. -
Formation of the 54th Mass
The most famous of the all black regiments. They attack Fort Wagner in South Carolina. -
Defeat of Vicksburg
Union defeated the Confederates. The leader was Grant. It was the last stronghold of the Confederates on the river. -
Gettysburg Address
Lincoln declared: can't let those who dead be for nothing, Nation was founded on "all men are created equal", and continue fighting for democracy so that "government of the people, by the Earth, for the people shalln't perish from the Earth". -
Sherman's March to the Sea
Sherman's March destroys the South. He destroyed anything that supported enemy troops. His troops tore up rail lines, destroyed crops and burned and looted towns, moving all through Atlanta and to the Sea. The path of destruction 60 miles wide and 300 miles long. -
Congress Passes the 13th Amendment
Lincoln urges congress to pass a law to end slavery everywhere. So the 13th Amendment was passed that Abolished slavery, prohibited involuntary servitude and nullified the Fugitive Slave Act and the 3/5 Compromise. -

Grant was chasing Lee. Lee wanted to continue fighting, but he couldn't so he surrenders. He surrenders, ending the war and Southern hopes.
