  • Fort Sumter

    The first battle between the Union and the South.
    There were no casualties during the attack.
  • Battle of Bull Run

    The first battle won by confederacy.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The south tried to go on the offensive.
    Union had 87,000 soldiers, while Confederates had 38,000 soldiers around 3,500 soldiers were killed and 17,000 wounded.
  • Emancipation Proclamation signed

    The proclamation gained union support from other countries like France, and Spain.
    It did not free slaves in loyal border states.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    Grant at first demanded unconditionally surrender. He later relented and the captured prisoners were "paroled" instead of taken prisoner.
    Confederate general Pemberton later resigned as a general but continued to fight.
