Lincoln is elected president
Republican Abraham Lincoln is elected and said he was not going to end slavery but did not want it to expand. But that was still not enough to calm the fears of the southern states so many of them seceded from the union. -

The representatives from the states that seceded met up and they made a government and it was called . They had their first president the day after. -
Battle of Fort Sumter
The confederate states attacked the US military at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. No one was killed but it started the civil war and was considered one of the bloodiest. It all happened because Anderson refused to surrender the fort. -
President Lincoln declares a blockade of southern ports
He wanted to prevent the import of supplies that they needed and the cash crops. It was also called the anaconda plan because it looked like a snake. The army would split into two, taking control of the Mississippi river as well. -

It was one of the first like the real battle of the civil war, this war was long and bloody. The confederacy won. This was also a big turning point in US weapons. They realized this battle was real and it would take more than just one. -

This battle was fought in hope to defeat Union Major Grant's army of TN. It was a Union victory, and it allowed him to start an operation on the Mississippi River. This battle lasted two days and the cost of victory was high. -
Battle of Antietam
This is one of the deadliest one day battle and Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This was a victory for the union, there was many new types of technology and tactics used in this battle along with bad decision making. -
Emancipation Proclamation
It says that all people that are held as slaves in the states shall be free from here on out. This was ordered by Abraham Lincoln and the presidential proclamation. It was also made so that the confederacy couldn't use the salves in the war. -
Battle of Gettysburg
A 3 day battle the confederates won, both armies were aiming for a road junction and that is when the two collided. It lasted so long because the union kept sending reinforcements in. -
Gettysburg Address
The Gettysburg Address was a speech given by Lincoln and it was about a new national cemetery at Gettysburg. It was to honor the soldiers who sacrificed their life in war. -
Sherman's March to the Sea
November 15- December 21,1864
Union General William T. Sherman led some 60,000 soldiers on a 285-mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. did not destroy any of the towns in their path, but they stole food and livestock and burned the houses and barns of people who tried to fight back. They wanted everyone to "feel the hand of war." -
13th amendment to the constitution
"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Is what the 13th amendment states. -
Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address
It urged the people to "bind up the nations wounds" that came from the Civil War and to get better peace. Also to use the bible in both the North and the South. Lincoln promised not to interfere with the institution of slavery where it existed. -
Surrender at Appomattox Court House
The goal was to rally the remnants of his beleaguered troops, meet Confederate reinforcements in North Carolina and resume fighting. But the resulting Battle of Appomattox Court House, which lasted only a few hours, effectively brought the four-year Civil War to an end. -
