  • Start of the war

    After seceding from the union due to Lincoln's election, Confederates fired and captured fort Sumter. This event started the Civil War.
  • Battle of Bull run

    This is the first conflict in the Civil War. Lincoln had ordered an invasion of Richmond Virginia, and this troop clashed with the union soldiers at Manassas VA. The Confederate soldiers drove the Union soldiers away, and Lincoln asks for 500,000 'real' soldiers.
  • Battle of Antietam

    This battle occurred in Sharpsburg, Maryland. It was stated to be the bloodiest day in America for the amount of casualtys on both sides. The union won this battle, but Lincoln fires one of his generals for not following all of his orders.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    This was a military order made by Lincoln to free every slave that is in a confederate state. It was created in September 22 1862, and went into effect in January 1 1863.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    This battle began when a confederate group looking for supplies bumped into a union group. The battle lasted for 3 days and ended with a victory for the Union side. This battle is considered a turning point because this stopped Robert E. Lee's plans of demoralising the north.
  • Defeat Of Vicksburg

    The Union surrounds the town of Vicksburg and made sure nothing went in or came out. The people had to resort to eating mules, rats, and dogs to survive. After about a month, the people surrendered and gave the union soldiers total acces to the Mississippi River, which helped in the 'Anaconda Plan'.
  • New York City Draft Riots

    Congress once tried passing a military order stating that all men between the ages of 20 and 45 are to go to war. When people were ordered to enforce the draft in New York city, a huge riot erupted.
  • Formation of the 54th Massachusetts regiment.

    This was one of the first official black units created in the Union army. This regiment was famous for showing great effort in the battle of Fort Wagner.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Abraham Lincoln delivers a speech at the location of the Battle of Gettysburg. The location soon became a cemetery for Union soldiers who died in the battle.
  • Sherman's march to the sea

    General William T. Sherman sends a few troops from Atlanta to Savanna Georgia. On the way, the troops destroyed railroads, burned barns, and killed livestock that belonged to the Confederate side. He referred to this as 'Total war'. This lasted until December the 21st.
  • Congress passes the 13th amendment

    This amendment stated that slavery and any other type of involuntary work is now illegal. The end to the war is near now that the south has less soldiers to fight for their side.
  • Creation of Freedman’s Bureau

    The freedman's Bureau was an agency that was created for the purpose of helping those that were recently freed by the 13th amendment. It provided food, shelter, and education.
  • Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

    Before the surrender, Robert E. Lee tried to get away from the Union soldiers, but he is eventually cornered. Even though Lee didn't want to stop the war, he eventually did message Grant to tell him that he was ready to surrender. Later that day, they agreed to put the Civil war to an end.
  • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    Lincoln decided to go see a play 5 days after the end of the civil war, where tension was still high between the north and the south. John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor, snuck behind Lincoln's chair, and shot him. Lincoln died the next morning.
  • 14th Amendment

    This amendment was ratified in order to prevent unfair treatment towards people who were not white. The amendment stated that everyone born in the United States of America has the same rights as everyone else, even if they were enslaved beforehand.
  • 15th Amendment

    The 15th Amendment allowed everyone to vote regardless of race, color, or whether or not they were previously enslaved. A lot of states tried repealing this by making laws that would only benefit white people.
  • End of Reconstruction

    The reconstruction era was a time (1865- 1877) were the north had tried 'rebuilding' the south after the Civil war. This era came to an end when President Hayes took his last troop out of the south to let them make their own decisions. The era that follows this is known as the 'Jim Crow Era' because there were many new laws that appeared that segregated colored people and white people.
