    Battle of Antietam
    The Battle of Antietam was the first victory for the Union during the civil war. Due to this win, Lincoln figured now would be the best time to release the Emancipation Proclamation, which would not only change the purpose of the war but would also give the Union an advantage; seeing as the proclamation would allow the Union to seize slaves from the confederate states. Due to the outcomes of Antietam it can be said that the Union will win the civil war.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    Battle of Fredericksburg
    Although, the Battle of Fredericksburg was a huge loss on the Union's part; the defeat in Fredericksburg taught the Union not to get too cocky. It also showed Lincoln that Ambrose Burnside, the newly appointed commander of the Union, was not what the Union needed to win the war, which allowed Lincoln to keep searching for another commander. Ultimately, this battle was needed to install passion in the Union soldiers so that they would continue to fight even harder to win the war.

    The Siege of Vicksburg was a very successful win that would mark the beginning of the Union's winning streak. The capture of Vicksburg not only divided the Confederacy and proved the military genius of Union General Ulysses S. Grant, but it also allowed the Union complete and total control over the Mississippi River which would benefit them throughout the rest of the civil war.
