Significance: It signaled the secession of the southern states. It was the very beginning of the Civil War. -

Significance: Major wake up call to the North. It was an indication that this would be a long and bloody war and would require new leadership and improved training to prepare the federal troops for action in the field. -

Significance: The confederate soliderts gave up hope on trying to control Western Tennessee and the Mississippi. Also, Confederate General Sidney Johnston (some say the best General in the South) died in this battle. -
7 Days Campaign
Significance: It raised the profile of Robert E. Lee as a driving force. It also caused Britain to consider sending aid to the south. This caused Britain to consider sending aid to the South. Also Lincoln started looking for a pretext to fire McClellan. -
2nd Battle of Bull Run (2nd battle of Manassas)
Significance: It was General Lee’s first invasion of the north. It also helped persuade the Union Leader in D.C. that they needed to discharge the slaves out of military demand. -
Antietam
Significance: It was the single deadliest battle ever fought in any american war. The british were also watching because if General Lee succeeded and the South won, the British were going to send them Military aid. The north won, getting rid of that plan for the time. -
Emancipation Proclamation issued
Significance:It said that all of the slaves in the confederate states were free, even though it wasn’t a law passed by congress. It freed millions of slaves. -
Emancipation Proclamation takes effect
Significance: It meant that as soon as the Union captured those states, only then would those slaves be free. It ended slavery in the south. -
Battle at Chancellorsville
Significance: It was an attempt by the Union forces to seize the Confederate capital of Richmond,Virginia but the Union's attempt failed. -

Significance: Major turning point in the war. The south was actually winning until this point. -

Significance: Ulysses S. Grant turns out to be one of the most successful Union generals during the Civil War -

Significance: Once Atlanta was under Union control, Sherman was able to continue his march to the sea, which sped up the Confederacy's Defeat. -
Abraham Lincoln re-elected
Significance: When he was re-elected, any hope for a negotiation with the confederacy disappeared. -

Significance: The Union had captured the confederate capital. It was a sign that the war would soon be over. -
Lee surrenders

Abraham Lincoln shot and killed
Significance: Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth, who was part of a larger conspiracy who wanted to bring back the Confederate cause. He was shot and killed five days after General Lee surrendered.
