  • Election of 1860

    Participants: Abraham Lincoln and John C. Breckinridge
    Outcome: Abraham Lincoln is the winner
    Long Term Effect: With Lincoln as President, slavery will be ended along with the start of the Civil War.
  • Chancellorsville

    Participants: General Robert E. Lee (confederate), General Thomas J. Jackson (confederate) and Major General Joseph Hooker (union)
    Outcome: Confederate Victory
    Long Term Effect: Jackson was killed, causing Confederates to assign new generals. Also, tention between Lincoln and Hooker began causing the Union the fall apart.
  • First Bull Run

    Participants: General Irvin McDowell (union), General Joseph E. Johnston (conferderate)
    Outcome: Confederate victory
    Long Term Effect: Brutal battle with most casualties so far. After this battle, many southerners and northerners realized this war was going to be a lot longer than they realized.
  • Ft. Henry and Ft. Donelson

    Participants: General Ulysses S. Grant (union), Lloyd Tilghman (confederate), John B. Floyd (confederate)
    Outcome: Union victory
    Long Term Effect: Grant received very high respect, and the Union became more encouraged and prepared to win the war
  • Shiloh

    Participants: General Benjamin M. Prentiss (union), William T. Sherman (union), confederate commander unknown
    Outcome: Union victory
    Long Term Effect: This victory allowed the army of Ulysses S. Grant to keep traveling south
  • Second Bull Run

    Participants: General John Pope (union), Robert E. Lee (confederate)
    Outcome: Confederate victory
    Long Term Effect: Because of the thousands lost for the Union, Pope was releived of his possition as commander
  • Battle Of New Orleans

    Participants: General Nathaniel Banks
    Outcome: Union victory
    Long Term Effect: This battle showed that foreign soldiers should be included including African Americans
  • 7 Day Battle

    Participants: George B. McClellan (union), Robert E. Lee (confederate)
    Outcome: Confederate victory
    Long Term Effect: About 200,000 total casualties. After this battle, many beleived the war would end very soon.
  • Antietam

    Participants: George B. McClellan (union), Robert E. Lee (confederate)
    Outcome: Strategic victory for Union
    Long Term Effect: Confederates withdraw back to Virginia
  • Fredericksburg

    Participants: Ambrose E. Burnside (union), Robert E. Lee (confederate)
    Outcome: Confederate victory
    Long Term Effect: The south celebrated its victory and Robert E. Lee is given a great amount of thanks and respect
  • Emacipation Proclamation

    Participants: Abraham Lincoln
    Outcome: Slavery was now illegal
    Long Term Effect: The south became furious as they beleived it was a violation of their rights and so they fought harder against the Union
  • Union Conscription

    Participants: The Union Leaders
    Outcome: The first American draft was created
    Long Term Effect: The northerners were furious and started many riots and with this, we still use drafting to this day
  • Conferderate Conscription

    Participants: Confederate Leaders
    Outcome: The draft act was taken in action to the southerner's cause as well
    Long Term Effect: soldiers will be drafted in the south for the Confederacy
  • Chancellorsville

    Participants: Joseph Hooker (union), Robert E. Lee (confederate)
    Outcome: Confederate victory
    Long Term Effect: After the defeat, the union was forced to withdraw from yorktown
  • Vicksburg

    Participants: Ulysses S. Grant (union), John C. Pemberton (confederate)
    Outcome: Union victory
    Long Term Effect: The union victiory was claimed as a holiday until WWII but is one of the many well know holidays that we still celebrate today
  • Gettysburg

    Participants: George G. Meade (union), John F. Reynolds (union), Robert E. Lee (confederate)
    Outcome: Union victory
    Long Term Effect: The union exploded with joy in reaction to the victory but then quieted once more when news came that Lee is still pursuing the north
  • Draft Riots

    Participants: Drafted blacks and other men
    Outcome: Riots suppressed
    Long Term Effect: there was a very strong predujuce against blacks afterwards
  • Gettysburg Address

    Participants: Abraham Lincoln
    Outcome: no outcome
    Long Term Effect: Became one of the most famous presidential speeches in American history
  • Battle Of The Wilderness

    Participants: Ulysses S. Grant (union), Robert E. Lee (confederate)
    Outcome: Inconclusive
    Long Term Effect: Was a strategic victory for the Union because they learned how Lee's army fights and they are now able to counter that tactic
  • Election of 1864

    Participants: Abraham Lincoln, George B. McClellan
    Outcome: Abraham Licoln victory
    Long Term Effect: Just like the election of 1860, there were no electoral votes given to Lincoln
  • Sherman's March To The Sea

    Participants: William Tecumseh Sherman
    Outcome: Much property was destroyed
    Long Term Effect: Sherman was given many thanks from president LIncoln
  • Surrender at Appomattox Court House

    Participants: Ulysses S. Grant (union), Robert E. Lee (confederate)
    Outcome: Union victory
    Long Term Effect: This battle was the final battle of the Civil War where Lee surrendered to the Union
  • Assassination Of Lincoln

    Participants:
    Outcome: Lincoln Died
    Long Term Effect: One of the greatest presidents in American history was killed and even though people make jokes 148 years later, it is still too soon
  • End of War

    Participants: All Americans
    Outcome: The Civil War has ended
    Long Term Effect: slavery is outlawed forever and the south is forced to free their slaves
