    South Carolina secedes from the Union. Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida secedes shortly after South Carolina.

    Confederates fire on Fort Sumter, South Carolina. President Lincoln got his wish and did not fire the first shot.
  • Virgina and three other states secedes

    Virginia secedes from the Union,followed within five weeks by Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

    President Abe Lincoln replaces McClellan with General Burnside. Lincoln had grown impatient with McClellan.

    Battle of Fredricksburg
    Army of Pontiac faces a major defeat in Fredricksburg.

    President Lincoln hands in the Emancipation Proclamation, which frees all slaves in territories held by Confederates and lets the enlisting of black soldiers in the Union Army.
