  • election of 1860

    Lincoln won the presidential election but he got less than half the popular vote, and no electoral votes from the south. North gains some leverage with Lincoln as president, south proves how much they dislike the north with no electoral votes for Lincoln
  • south carolina secedes from the union

    south Carolina left the union in a unanimous vote from the legislature The south wants to be free from the government but it helps the north because the south is losing power by leaving the union
  • Shots fired at Ft Sumter

    First shots are fired at Ft Sumter. The first shots were important because Lincoln could just start to fight back or retreat but he decides to just send food to Ft Sumter so that he doesn’t attack or retreat
  • battle of bull run

    first actual battle in the civil war and it was a confederate victory
  • Monitor v Merrimack

    first fight between ironclad warships. The Merrimack hit the monitor and caused them to go into shallow water but when they tried to attack Minnesota they didn't have enough ammo and the ship was damaged so they went back to the navy yard. it was considered a union victory
  • battle of shiloh

    45,000 confederate soldiers attacked the unsuspecting union army for control of the mississippi river valley 24,000 soldiers died over the next few days of that battle. bloodiest days of the civil war
  • Battle of Antietem

    bloodiest day in American history with a total of 22,717 people dead, wounded, or missing. the confederate army had started to retreat but the union army didn't chase them. significant turning point in war for the union because of political ramifications
  • Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation

    freed all slaves. allowed black men to join the army and by the end of the war almost 200,000 black soldiers had fought for the union and for freedom
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    turning point in war with the unions victory. The battle had the most casualties in the entire war. resulted in Gen. Robert E. Lee losing all hope of invading the north
  • Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg address

    Lincoln gives a speech at Gettysburg Pennsylvania after the battle of Gettysburg. the speech made a point that the war was for the freedom of the people in America and that it gives us a chance for national regeneration.
  • Ft Pillow Massacre

    confederate slaughter of African American troops stationed at Ft Pillow. important because instead of taking the men as prisoners of war after they surrendered they just killed them
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    a military campaign by Sherman taking his troops from Atlanta to port Savannah. his forces followed a "scorched earth" policy, where they destroyed military targets, industry, infrastructure and civilian property.
  • General Lee surrenders at Appomattox Courthouse

    general lee surrendered the battle at the Appomattox courthouse. the surrender marked the disbandment of the northern Virginia army letting around 28,000 soldiers go home, and effectively ending the war in Virginia.
