    South Carolina was first. They seceded because they felt they no longer had a voice in the government

    After Shiloh the South did not attempt such a massive operation again. A lot of people died. Also it convinced that the only way the south would give up is if the north used total war.

    One of the first major battles it ruined the Union's hope of winning the Civil War quickly and easily it was going to be a long and bloody war.
  • New Orleans

    was an important event for the Union. Having fought past Forts Jackson and St. Philip, the Union was unopposed in its capture of the city itself, which was spared the destruction suffered by many other Southern cities. However, the controversial and confrontational administration of the city by its military governor caused lasting resentment. This capture of the largest Confederate city was a major turning point and an incident of international importance.
  • Emancipation Proclamination

    Lincoln declared the slaves “free” in order to get the British on their side. This was extremely symbolic and focused the war to be over slavery.
  • Richmond

    It was the capitol of the Confederacy and thus its capture was highly signifigant of the end f the Confederacy
  • Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg was a decisive engagement in that it arrested the Confederates' second and last major invasion of the North, destroyed their offensive strategy, and forced them to fight a defensive war in which the inadequacies of their manufacturing capacity and transportation facilities doomed them to defeat.
