Cooper Union Speech
Abe Lincoln gave a speech, against slavery in New York. This caused him to become very popular in the North, and led him to run for president. -
Abe visits Five Points
Five points was a slum in America, while visiting Lincoln spent time with children at Sunday school helping them learn. This was later written about in the news paper, which helped boost his popularity with the election. -
Campaigning
Most people did not actively campaign for themselves during this time, Lincoln used posters and a few other things to get his name out there. This was used so he could get more popularity votes and beat the campaigners. -
Abe is Elected
Abe Lincoln is elected as the 16th president. He received 180 electoral collage votes, and 40% of the popularity votes. -
Succession meeting is held
The first meeting to help decide to leave the union or not is held. It took place Columbia, SC, and later was the first state to secede. -
Start of the Confederate States of America
South Carolina holds a meeting to discuss if they should secede from the union. It is approved three days later and they start to take action. -
Crittenden Compromise
The was going to be a compromise between slave supports and people who were against slavery, it was introduced by John Crittenden. What it was going to do was allow slave territories in the north, but it was never put into effect, for it was not supported by the North. -
South Carolina secedes
South Carolina is the first state to secede from the union. After this other states begin to follow and also leave the union. -
War is Close
Charleston is notified by telegraph that troops on on their way ready for war. These troops are heading to Fort Sumter to bombard the confederates with cannons. -
Mississippi Leaves the Union
Mississippi decides to follow South Carolina and secede from the Union and becomes a confederate state. -
Confederate Government
The states that have seceded created their own form of government to follow. This is when the Confederate States of America is officially formed. At this point seven states have joined the confederates. -

Battle of Fort Sumter
This was the first battle of the civil war, lasting 34 hours, with 86 soldiers surrendering. The confederates bombarded the union and it was left as an unfinished battle. -
A Call for Help
President Lincoln calls for 75,000 troops to stop the rebel militia, this causes four additional states to leave the union. He then later only ask 43,000 volunteers, but they must serve for three years. -
Southern Blockade
Lincoln calls for the Union to form a blockade at southern ports. This makes it hard for the south to stay well supplied and limits them through the rest of the war. -
Last State Secedes
Tennessee is the last confederate state to follow and leave the union. The state feared they would no longer have slavery with Abe Lincoln as president and wanted to fight to keep their was of life. -

Abe gives a speech defending his decision of the blockades of the militia to congress. -
Battle of Bull Run
Battle of bull run was fought in Virginia and was a victory for the Confederates. This was shock, since the Northern army had more power and money, but were easily taken down. -
Union Defeat
Lincoln realizes just how long this war will be and says "its damed bad". The Union army faces defeat when Stonewall Jackson resisted attacks, this causes the Union army to retreat back to D.C -
General advance
Lincoln issues a war general order. He needs naval and land forces to get a general advance before Febuary 22nd. -
Unconditional Surrender
A Victory for general Ulysses S. Grant in Tennessee. This where he earns the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" when he took Fort Henry. -
Loss in the White house
Lincoln is grieving over the loss of his eleven year old son. His son dies due to drinking dirty water at the White house. -
Merrimack Attack
Merrimack attacks three union warships and sinks them. The next day the Monitor fights Merrimack until they backed off and the battle ends in a draw. -
Surprise Attack of The Union
Shiloh was a two day battle where the confederates make a surprise attack on Grants troops, who are not prepared. The Union had 13,000 dead or wounded and the Confederates had 10,000 -
McClellan's plan
In the Spring McClellan moves his army down the Potomac river and reaches the Chesapeake bay. Lee started to move against these troops which started the seven day battle. -
Seven Days Battle
Battles were fought in Richmond VA. The South had less men and lost more men than the north did, but McClellan still had the north retreat. -
Battle of Antietam
This was the bloodiest singe day battle with over 500 men dying in less than 10 minutes. Antietam was a standoff battle, and McClellan does not pursue the unsupplied army, retreats again, and it later fired. -
Fredricksburg
Burnside tries to capture the confederate zone under General Lee's command. -
Loss at Fredericksburg
The army under General Burnside's command had a costly defeat at this battle, where 12,653 men are lost, and 5,309 confederates are lost. A Union soldier compared this to hell. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Lincoln finalizes this which is freeing all slaves in confederate territories. He also pushes to have freed slaved be allowed to enlist in the union army, this is the start to abolishing slavery. -
Princess Royal
A confederate ship carrying supplies is captured by the Union naval forces at the Charleston Harbor. -
The Draft
U.S congress enforces a draft which will effect men aged 20 to around 45. The only way to not get drafted is to pay $300 or provide someone to replace your spot in war. -
Drafting starts
Drafting officially begins for the Union forces. It had been happening for a year already on the Confederate side. -
Union Defeat
The union army id defeated be a much smaller Confederate army, causing confidence to be lost in the Union side. Stonewall Jackson is wounded by how own soldiers here as well. -
Stonewall Dies
The south suffers a huge a loss when Jackson dies from his wounds he got from Chancellorsville. His last words were "Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of trees". -
End of Gettysburg
The end of the battle resulted in a Union victory. Over 57,000 casualties total with over 28,000 of them being from the Confederate side. -
Anti Riots
Riots all over NY break out in order to fight the idea of a draft. Over 120 people are killed in this riot and around $2 million of damage is caused. -
Picketts Charge
On day 3 of Gettysburg General Lee orders Pickett to charge at Union forces. Half of the 12,000 confederate soldiers who participated died. -
Gettysburg Address
In Gettysburg, PA, Lincoln delivers a speech about bring the North and south together again and have unity as a nation. He sees this as being important because many people are losing their lives in battle from both sides. -
The Union Escapes
109 Union officers escape from Libby prison after weeks of digging their way out. 48 of the officers who escaped where later captured again. -
Andersonville Prison Camp
In Georgia Andersonville prison opens on Fort Sumter. This prion is best know for its horrible condition, overcrowding of prisoners and very high death rates. -
General Grant
Ulysses S. Grant is appointed Lieutenant general at the request of the President. After this he assumes command of all union armies. -
Red River Campaign Ends
The Red River Campaign was where the Union army marched along the river in Louisiana. During this march they completely destroyed the south and causes small battles. -
Fort Pillow
Confederate Troops shoot more than 200 prisoners. They also shot some whites who begged to live under General Bedfords command. -
Overland Campaign
This was a Campaign where the Generals of the North and South had to battle against each other, which was a smart move for the North since their army was bigger. There was many causulites for both sides and caused the South to later surrender. -
Yellow Tavern
At this battle the South blocked Union forces under the command of General Philip Sheridan. The Confederates General Stuart was mortally injured here. -
Costly Mistake
General Grant leads his army to the Cold Harbor. Here they ran into fortified rebels and the Union had 7,000 casualties in under 20 minutes. -
Missed Opprotunity
Union Forces fail to see that they can block the confederates at railroad lines. This causes a 9 month siege of Petersburg. -
Atlanta is Captured
Atlanta was fairly won by the Victory of General Sherman's army. This win really helps Lincolns popularity for his upcoming campaign. -
Lincolns Second Term
The presidential election is help on November 8th, in the middle of the Civil War. Lincoln beats McClellan, who ran for the democrats. -
Peace Meeting
A meeting is help to hopefully find peace and end the war. Lincoln and Stephens do not agree and the war will continue. -
Slaves fight for confederates
The Confederate army is falling behind the Union and have much less soldiers. That have to start enlisting slaves in a desperate attempt to keep fighting. -
Fort Stedman
Confederate forces capture Lees army from the Union. This caused the Union to face many causalities and around 1,000 men captured. -
Richmond is evacuated
Grants army begins an advance and get across southern lines. Fires are started and the confederates are evacuated. -
Surrender at Appomattox
General Lee surrenders to Grant at one of the last battle of the Civil War. This was important because it was anther North victory, since the south surrendered again. -
Lincolns Assassination
Lincoln was killed by John Wilkes Booth at Fords theater in Washington D.C. Fords enter the presidential box and killed him around 10 pm during the show. -
President Johnson
After the assassination of Lincoln Andrew Johnson is sworn into office the day after. He will now be an important part to the rebuilding of america post civil war. -

Confederate President meets with cabinet for one last time before there is no longer a confederacy government. -
Palmito Ranch
This is know as the very last battle of the Civil War. This war only last four hours and had a few dozen casualties from the confederate side. -

The secret service is founded in Washington D.C. -
13th Amendment
The 13th Amendment is what formally abolished slavery in the United States. It passed the senate in 1864, but was not approved until the end of 1965. -
Douglass and Johnson
Black delegate Fredrick Douglas meets with the Union President and tries to advocate for black suffrage. Johnson's states his opposition and the meeting ends with a disagreement. -
Salves are Citizens
The Civil rights act is passed by Congress to make slaves full citizens. Although the 13th amendment abolished slavery, it never gave them rights regular people had. -
Johnson Votes
Johnson Votes the civil rights act and Freedmen Bureau. A new version of Freedmen Bureau is later passed the the civil rights act is overridden by congress, and passed. -
Memphis Riots
A serious of three day riots were started when a white officer tried to arrest an ex soldier who was black. Many other blacks come to show support and voice how this is unfair. -
Racial Violence
48 people are killed, and a lot of black homes and churches are burned down. Even whites who work in black buildings are also attacked. -
Homestead Act
This act was an effort of trying to help farmers at the End of the war, trying to get rid of dept. Since the south was destroyed many farmers lost everything and had to completely start over it also supported blacks being able buy land. -
Tennessee Returns to the Union
The War is now over and Tennessee is approved to renter the union. This will be the first state back that left for the confederacy. -
Riots
Riots breakout in New Orleans when a white mob attacks blacks and Republicans. This will cause 40 people to die. -
Mentions of Reconstruction
President Johnson starts a tour speaking out to gain support for the reconstruction post war. He will also speak out about the potential candidates for the next election. -
Reconstruction Begins
Republicans win majority of the House of Reps and the Senate. Election caused a divide between Johnson and Radicals. -
Black Men can Vote
Johnson had vetoed the right of blacken to vote, but it was over ridden by congress and passed. It was only passed in the District of Columbia, but is a start compared to their previous treatment. -
Reconstruction Acts
This was first act passed which officially started reconstruction of the south post war. This placed the south under the Unions military and government, bringing them back together. -
Second Reconstruction
This act made a few changes to first which was passed earlier in the month. The South is divided into five military districts with no regards to race and started the process of readmitting to the United Sates. Each district was appointed a military official and started the removal of the states officials from the South. -
U.S buys Alaska
U.S buys Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. This is not seen as a good purchase since they were recovering financially post war. -
Blacks Protest
Blacks will ride the train in New Orleans in order to protest the segregation that they still face. This is an event that which was reacting the riots against them earlier. -
Republican Convention
This will be the first state wide Republican convention, Thirty countries were represented and 125 delegates were there. Almost half of the people that attended were black . This is where Harrison Reed was elected the chairmen of the party. -
Third Act
The third act will give supreme power to the Union generals who are in the south helping with reconstruction. Johnson wanted all three acts to be vetoed, but were passed by congress anyway and ended up helping America. -
Tenure Act
This was a law which was used to restrict what power the President had. This was needed since Johnson started to abuse his power when he suspended the secretary of War during and congressional recess. -
Alaska is a State
Alaska is officially approved to being a U.S state, the second to last state added. -
Thoughts if Impeachment
The U.S Congress will look into impeaching Johnson since he is not following through with his promises of reconstruction. This must be looked into since he is vetoing all bills relating to helping rebuild the States.
