Fort Sumter
April 12, 1861 to April 14, 1861
President Lincoln sends a ship to resupply the federal fort. Believing the ship had troops and weapons, the Confederacy fired on the fort. Due to the attack on the fort, Lincoln calls up 75,000 troops and some of the border states, such as Virginia, secede. -
First Bull Run
Brigadier General Ivan McDowell’s union struck force on July 21 shelling the enemy across Bull Run while more troops crossed the river at Sudley Ford in attempt to hit the Confederate left flank.
By four o’clock in the afternoon, both sides had an equal amount of men on the field of battle and Beauregard ordered a counter attack along the entire line. -
Vicksburg
May 18, 1863 to July 4, 1863
The confederates lost Memphis in Tennessee and New Orleans in Louisiana. Grant arrived at the rear of Pemberton and had 30,000 troups isolated. Grant attacked pemberton twice in mid may. Pemberton surrenedred on July 4th 1863. The win at Gettysburg and the surreneder at Vicksburg made this the turning point in the war. -
Chickamauga
September 19, 1863 to September 20, 1863
In mid-September, Union General William Rosecrans had gathered his army of some 60,000 at Chickamauga, which was 12 miles southwest of Chattanooga. On the first day of the battle General Bragg attacked the Union forces numerous times. On the 2nd day he split his army into 2 wings. 10 Confederate generals were killed. The casulties from this war were close to 20,000. The Union lost 16,00 soldiers. -
Sportsylvania
May 5, 1864 to May 21, 1864
Spotsylvania was one of the bloodiest fighting of the Civil War, close to 18,000 Union and 11,000 Confederate casualties. Before the attack on Bloody Angle, Grant had sent a cable to Washington stating his intention to "fight it out on this line if it takes all summer." Lee was forced again to retreat. -
Wilderness
May 5, 1864 to May 7 1864
Both sides took Prisioners of War. After the first day of battle it was inconclusive. On May 6th the Union attacked the Confederates. The Union thought the Confederates had retreated, they were mistaken. Union Army suffered more than 17,500 casualties. -
Sherman's March
September 2, 1864 to December 12, 1864
Sherman's troups marched twards savannah at 30 mph in 2 wings. November 22, 3,500 Confederate cavalry started a skirmish with the Union soldiers at Griswoldville, 650 Confederate troups were killed. Sherman arived in savanna on December 21st. In april 1865 the Confederates surrenedered. -
Petersburg
June 9, 1864 to April 9, 1865
Grant captured Fort Harrison on September 29th. On March 25, 1865 the Confederates were driven back at the Battle of Fort Stedman, leaving Lee with 50,000 troops as opposed to Grant's 120,000. Lee was very highly out numbered. Lee surrendered to Grant on April 9. -
Lincoln's Assassination
John Wilkes Booth planned to kidnap Lincoln on March 20, 1865. However he didn't show up. At 10:15, Booth slipped into the box and fired his .44-caliber single-shot derringer into the back of Lincoln's head. John Wilkes Booth was captured, Booth was shot and killed and all his co-conspiritors were hung.
