    Election Of Lincoln
    President Abraham Lincoln was elected president for the Republican party of the North. He had an advantage because the Democrat party split into two and that split their votes. Lincoln wanted to keep the Union together without the South seceding. This was the spark for the Civil War.
  • Texas Seceds from the Union

    Texas Seceds from the Union
    Texas became the 7th state to secede from the Union with a majority vote of 166-8. Sam Houston was strongly against this idea because he felt like they would lode the military support and proection of the Union. He wasn't governor after the secession. They seceded before Lincoln took office.
  • Houston Kicked out of office

    Houston Kicked out of office
    Before he was kicked out of office, Sam Houston held the position of governor. He did his best to keep Texas from seceding from the Union. But sadly, his efforts were unsuccessful. Once Texas seceded, Houston was thrown out of office because he refused to pledge allegiance to the Confederate States of America.
  • Battle at Fort Sumter

    Battle at Fort Sumter
    Fort Sumter was in the middle of Charlston harbor surrounded by water. With the Union inside surrounded by Confederate troops and ships, they only had 6 weeks of food left and were ill prepared. For 34 hours, Confederate ships opened fire on Fort Sumter.This was the first battle of the Civil war. The Confederate troops ended up taking over the fort with no one dying on either side. The Union lost. This effected the War because it was a significant port that the Union lost.
  • Battle of Galveston

    The Union attempted to blockade the bay with big ships, but two small cottonclads snuck through and took down a ship called the USS Harriet Lane. Union won the first battle of Galveston, but on the first of the year, the Confederate troops opened fire on the Union troops. But then the Confederate troops regained control and won. This affected the War because one of the Unions best ships, the USS Harriet Lane was captured by the Confederates.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    This lasted from July 1, to July 3, 1863. Fought in and arund the town of Gettysburg, Pensylvania, this battle had the largest number of casuaties in the War. The Union had 23,055, and the Confederacy had 23,231. The Union won and suffered greatly. This affected the war because it was really the turning point for both sides in the Civil War.
  • Battle of Sabine Pass

    Battle of Sabine Pass
    This battle took place at the mouth of the Sabine river. At 3:40, the Union ships went through the pass firing at the fort as they passed.The Confederate troops blew up two of the Union ships. The Confederates held their ground and took 300 Union prisoners and two boats in the victory.This affected the war because it was the border between Louisiana and Texas, and it was for control of the waters.

    This Campaign lasted from March 10, to May 22, 1864. This was a series of battles fought along the Red River in Louisiana. The Union strongly outnumbered the Confederates. The Unions efforts to take over many ports and territories was a failure and the Confederates won. This didn't have much of an effect on the war except that thousands of lives were lost.

    The Civil war officially ended when Robert E. Lee surrendered his last major army to Ulysses Grant. The last battle fought was the Battle of Palmito ranch. The Confederates were running low of supplies while the North was not after four long years of fighting. Robert E. Lee didn't have enough men to go on.

    Even though the Civil War had ended, Col. Barret send a group of 250 men to the mainland to attack reported rebel camps. They then attacked a group of Confederate troops at Palmito Ranch. The Union ended up retreating back. This didn't have a big effect on the Civil War.

    Juneteenth is the oldest celebration of the ending of slavery in the United States. This was two and a half years after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. This was when all slaves became free. This was also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. Recognized as a state holiday or special day in a lot of states.

    It witnessed America's first experiment in interracial democacy. This was a time for all Americans where there was a social, economic, and political change. This was widely seen as a time of misgovornment, and corruption. Reconstruction left a problem that still exists: Racism.
