South Carolina Secession
South Carolina is the first state to secede from America. This sparks other states to follow in its footsteps. Also this will be a cause of the civil war between seceded states and the ones that remained. -
Lincoln's Inaguration
This event took place on the eve of the civil war. Lincoln also states that southern seccesion would not be tolerated. Took the side of the Union and changed history. -
Signing of Constitution of Confederacy
This formalizes the unity of the seceded states. Creation of a new entity. This act adds up to the start of the war and makes the Union angry. -
Battle of Fort Sumter
This battle marked the beginning of the Civil War. It started with the COnfederate forces firing on Union soldier. THis led to to more states leaving the union and joining the COnfederacy. -
Union Blockades South
This blockade prevented the passage of goods,supplies, and arms. This was signficiant because the south did not produce supplies and the north did so they couldnt make it themsevles. Foreign aid could not be contacted. -
First Battle of Bull Run
This battle was the major land battle fought. It gave the South the confidence it needed in order to fight the Union. THe North also realized that defeating the South would not be as easy as they thought it would. -
Jefferson Davis elected President of Confederacy.
Davis's less than par tactics led to Southern Demise in the war. Held out until the ends resulting in more losses. However he chose to appoint Robert Lee who proved to be a good leader. -
Moniter vs. Merrimack
This battle calls for an era of steel warships. This change will lead to the United Sates becoming the largest Navy in the world. Changed Naval Warfare forever. -
Battle of Antietam
This battle was the bloodies day in the US history and it was the first battle to be fought on Northern soil.This inconclsive victory for the North led to Lincolns issue of the EMancipation Proclaimation. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
This battle led to terrbile moral for Union Troops. However this strenghtened the SOuthern army and they were elated to win.Led to change in leadership for Union. -
Grant takes Control
Grant turns out to be an amazing general. War is won partially because of him. Makes Robert E Lee surrender. Wins major popularity vote from America. -
Battle of Wilderness
First major Union offensive toward Confederate capitol at Richmond. Union troops beat south moral up a little. Heavy casualties for Union. -
Shermans March to Sea
Leads to major loss of crops for South. Many towns and cities were burned and almost everything was burned. Economically this was a major disaster. Ruined the South. -
Capture of Savannah
Ends Shermans march to the sea, savign the south from devastation. Sherman liberated the city for blacks. MAde the citizens happy as they were tired of the war. -
13th Amendment
Ended slavery that had been a major topic in the war and in society. Congress approval and South beocmes angry. However there is still a hatred for blacks. Treated unfairly. -
Lincoln sworn in for 2nd term
This leads to him being the first president to be assasinated. Makes some major changed in introducing amendments such as freeing slaves. shows Union was happy with its president. -
Fall of Richmond
The biggest sign that war is officially over. Confederate CApital lost to Union. Confederate government fled, unable to make decisions. -
The surrender at Appomatox Courthouse:
This was the final major engagement of the Civil War. This ends the Civil War. This leads to a period of Reconstruction for the South which was in bad condition. -
Surrender of General Johnston
Largest army different from RObert Lee's. One step closer to the end of the war. South give up slowly. -
New Orleans Riot
Showed that although slavery is abolished, hatred of blacks is not. Freedom for blacks will not be easily achieved.North could not change the feelings of Southerners.
