-The northerners and southerners cannot find a resolution to their debate of slavery
-Henery Clay (also known as "The Great Compromiser" quickly settles the dispute by assigning Maine would be a free state and Arkansas was open to slavery
-Missouri Comprimise line at 36 30' -
The Nullification Crisis
-Southerners felt that the tariffs were unfair and were only good for northerners
-John C. Calhoun said any state could void a federal law if it were found unconstitutional
-After the federal government vdenied South Carolina's arguement, South Carolinsa threatened to secede
-Henry Clay lowered the tariffs as a comprimise -
Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
-Passed in 1850 by congress
-Allowed the capture of runaway slaves in the North
-Tensions rose to all time high
-Setup for John Brown's Raid and the Civil War -
Comprimise of 1850
-Debates over if new territories from Mexico woulf become slave states or free states
-Henry Clay came up with a comprimise saying California would be a free state and that congress would not ban slavery from all the other territories -
Bleeding Kansas
-5,000 proslavery people from Missouri came and voted proslavery in Kansas illegally
-Anti-slavery started their own government
-Pro-slavery attacked new anti-slavery government
-As a result of this attack, John Brown murdered his por-slavery members -
Dred Scott Descion
-Dred Scott lived in the free state of Illinois and Wisconsin before moved back to the slave state Missouri
-Any african American (even slaves) could never become U.S. citizens
-Court declared Missouri Compriimise unconstitutional
-Slavery permitted in all territories in the country -
Attack on Harpers Ferry
-John Brown wanted slaves to be inspired by his plan to capture the arsenal from the army base in Harpers Ferry, Virginia to arm the slaves
-John Brown and his men were later captured and ten were killed
-John Brown was hung on December 2nd
-John Brown was saluted while being put to death by fellow abolitionists
-Tensions about slavry had risen to a breaking point in America -
The Election of 1860
-Abraham Lincoln won election and becomes the 16th persident
-Southern states do not trust Lincoln and start seceding from the union.
