Harriet Tubman
was born into slavery in Maryland in 1820. after her owner died she feared she was going to be sold. she then decided to run away and succeeded. -
The liberator
A news papers written by William Lloyd Garrison. He wrote about immediate emancipation. -
Nat turner's rebellion
It was led by a Virginia slave got more than 50 slaves and killed about 60 whites.turner and some of his followers were eventually captured and executed. -
the north star
It was a news paper written by Fredrick Douglass. It was an anti slavery news paper that guided slaves to freedom. -
compromise of 1850
California would be admitted as a free state. southerners got a more effective fugitive slave law and added that any other state that wants to be part of the union will have popular sovereignty. -
Fugitive slave act
alleged fugitives were not entitled to a trial by jury. Any one that is convicted of helping a slave was liable for a fine of $1,000 and imprisonment for up to six months. -
Underground railroad
It was a system of routes to help slave reach the north. It was started by Harriet Tubman. It helped 300 slaves escape. -

was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe and it expressed her hatred for slavery and that it is a moral problem rather than a political problem. -

Dread Scott v. Sandford
Dread Scott is a slave form Missouri that was moved with his owner to a non slave territory back to Missouri. He is suing because he thought that if he lives in a free state that he is free. the courts ruled against him and said it would be unconstitutional to deprive the owner of his property without due process. -
Abraham Lincoln and Stephan Douglas debates
they both had similar ideals the only difference is on how to eradicate slavery from territories Lincoln thought it was immoral but congress needed to pass a law and Douglas thought popular sovereignty was the way to go. Douglas won the debates but Lincoln split the democratic party. -
Harper's Ferry
John brown gathered financial support from abolitionist in the north and got a band of 21 men to raid the federal arsenal at Harper's ferry. the rebellion did not work and john brown was convicted and put to death. -
Lincoln is elected president
Lincoln wanted to halt the spread of slavery but assured the southern states that it would not interfere with the slaves they have now. he did not appear on the ballot for most of the southern states. -

southern states decided to succeed from the union to start their country called the confederate states of america and voted their own president. they also drafted their own constitution similar to the united states. -
Battle at Bull Run
It was the first southern victory and the first time there was bloodshed. after they won the battle they didn't attack Washington and they quit the army and went home. -

Lincoln decided to feed hungry troops at the fort than to reinforce the base. this was the first battle of the civil war. -
Battle at Antietam
the union found general lee's plans and mcClellan orderd his men to pursue lee and his men. there were over 26,000 casulties. Instead of persuing the other half of the men the general did nothing and that lead to him being discharged by lincoln. -
Emancipation proclamation
the proclamation did not free slaves immediately because it was only implied to areas behind confederate lines. it gave the war a moral purpose. -

It is a draft that forced men to go into the army. -

Is a tax that takes a specified percentage of a persons income. -
Battle at gettysburg
It was in a town in Pennsylvania, the battle lasted for 3 days and the union suffered 23,000 casualties while the confederates had a 28,000 casualties. -

Grant won and over taken a confederate stronghold at Vicksburg. this divided the south between the Mississippi river. -

It helped the country that they are not just individual states but one unified nation. -

William Sherman began his march with his army though southeast georgia to the sea creating a wide path of destruction to make the public sick of war and to demolish their fightiong spirit. -

Surrender at Appomattox court house
at Appomattox Virginia General Lee and General Grant Met at a private home to arrange confederate surrender at Lincolns request, the terms were generous. -
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
John Wilkes Booth shot and killed Lincoln in the theatre because of his views of slavery and that he was the reason it was abolished.
