    people were worried about the slavery issue as people moved out west.
    Henry Clay settled the debate by stating that Maine would be admitted as a free state and Arkansas would be open to slavery.
    The Missouri Compromise was many laws that helped keep the number of slave and free states balanced

    Southern states didnt like the tariffs because they thought they were unfair and only helped the north.
    John C. Calhoun said any state could nullify a federal law it considers unconstitutional.
    Federal law rejected the South's argument. Then the South threatened to secede.
    Henry Clay came up with a compromise and lowered the tariff.

    After the Mexican war congress had many debates over the territories being free or slave. Henry Clay made a Compromise. California would be a free state and congress wouldnt ban slavery from the mexican territories they won.

    The fugitive slave act was passed to catch slavesthat escaped from the south. This showed abolitionist it would be really hard to end slavery. The laws made tension and based John Brown's raid and the American Civil war.

    5000 people from missouri voted for slavery for Kansas. Anti-slavery created their own government.They were atacked by people for slavery. John Brown was mad and killed his neighbors that were for slavery.

    John Brown wanted to show slaves how to fight for their freedom. His idea was to capture arsenal. Brown and his men were captured. Abolitionist were mad because they liked Brown.

    Abraham Lincoln won the election but, the South did not trust him. Southern states started to secede because of the new president.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    He was a slave that lived in illinois and Wisconsin before he moved to Missouri. He tried to gain freedom. He was told blacks would never become citizens. The court said the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional. Slavery was allowed in all of the territories.
