He showed his support for the north but did not isolate the south.It avoided the Republican- Party platform. -

Begining of the Civil War and was a bombarding of Fort Sumter. The battle led to the wide support of military action on both sides. -

The first battle of the Civil War, and the Union believed this would be an easy victory. The south had motivation and were protecting their capital. The south won and this showed the north that this was not going to be an easy war. -

The Confederates launched a suprise attack on Grant's forces. The Union won due to bad weather and reinforcements of the north. -

Consisted of 6 different battles throughout the Virgina Penninsula. The battles includedMechanicsville, Gaines' Mill, Savage's Station, Glendale, and Malvern Hill. This was a Confederate victory. -
Battle of Bull Run #2
On the first day tthe fighting lasted 48 hours. Gen. John Pope commanded the Union and General Robert E.Lee for the south. He arrived at the battle first. -
Battle of Antietam (Not Clear)
The Union's master plan was called the anaconda plan.The south went up north and tried to attack twice. There was no clear winner and the was the bloodiest first day of the Civil War. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
Burnside was the general of the Union forces and Lee was the general for the Confederate forces. 100,000 Union and 70,000 Confederate forces took part in this battle. The Union's goal was to defeat Lee's army and break through to Richmond. -
Battle of Stones River
Union forces under Rosecrans fought against Bragg's forces outside of Murfreesboro. The north brought in reinforcements. -

An order by President Lincoln to free slaves that are not in the states in Union ocntrol. -

The south defeated the Union army. They had more men than the south and this is also where Jackson was also accidentally shot and killed by his own men. -
Siege of Vicksburg
The civilians of Vicksburg dug tunnels and underground shelters in response of the siege. The cause of the battle was to divide the Confederate forces. This is also called the Battle of Vicksburg. -
Battle of Gettysburg
Mead was the general for the north. The battle was fought in Gettysburg PA. The Union won and the VA army was defeated. -
Battle of Chickamauga
Fought between The Army of the Cumberland and the Confederate Army of Tennessee. -

Lincoln gives a speech using only 272 words adressing the public on the conflict and devistation of the Civil War. -
Battle of Chattanooga
Grant launched a successful attack on Lookout mountain and ordered Sherman to attack. His attack failed but Thomas launched another successful one. The Union victory opened the south to invasions of the north. -
Battle of the Wilderness
Grant and Mead were in charge of the Union forces and Lee was in charge of the Confederate forces. Mead led his forces across the Rapidan River. The 2nd Union Corps line was more than a mile long. Longstreet was decommissioned for 5 months. Grant was trying to go to Spotsylvania. -

The second battle of Grant's campaign against Lee. -
Lincoln is re-elected
The hope of containing the southern army was gone after the election of Lincoln. -
Sherman's March to Sea
Sherman wanted to frighten Georgia's population into abandoning. This hurt southern morale. Sherman assigned Thomas to go after the confederate troops that were moving west. -
Battle of Franklin
The Confederate general was John Bell Hood and for the Union Thoma and Sherman.The Union had more advantages than the south. Union morale ran high after control of Franklin grew stronger. -
Lincoln's Second Inauguration
Instead of speaking of happiness he spoke of the sad. Of the damages done by the war and the reconstruction efforts that would be essential in thr establishment of a new union. -
