    Harriet Tubman escapes to Philadelphia
    Harriet Tubman escaped to Philadelphia when she was about 29 in 1849. When she escaped to the Union she became their spy. Running back through the railroads to bring people back to be free. She thought it was her duty to help people escape slavery.
  • The Fugitive Slave Act

    The Fugitive Slave Act
    Government officials wrote The Fugitive slave act was written to say saying that If anyone in the north was said to be a slave then they would be taken into the custody of an officer. The north had to help with the capture because the south made it clear that slaves were their property. The act was written and enforced in 1850.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    In 1852 Harriet Beacher Stowe wrote a novel about an African American man. The story sort of set ground for the Civil War because the book tells the story about an African man who becomes friends with a girl and before she dies she asks her father to release the slaves. When Uncle Tom refuses to tell his new owner where the slave are he gets beaten to death. So it revealed what all of the North knew. Slaves got mistreated and beaten. But it showed people that they can be friends.

    In 1854 Stephan A. Douglas wrote the Kansas-Nebraska Act. This stated that the states could use popular sovereignty to decide whether to have slavery in the borders.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott and his family moved to a free state for a while with their owner and because the was in a free state he sued for his freedom. and they ended up taking the sue up to the Supreme Court. They ended it because they said that slaves did not have a say or their own voice. They were not a person so they could not sue. All he wanted is for his family to be free.

    Abraham Lincon and Stephan Douglas came together for about 7 debates. These debates were on the serious topic of slavery. one was for it and one was against it.
  • John Brown attacks Harper Ferry

    John Brown attacks Harper Ferry
    He got guns and people to help with the attack and the people that owned them. Which was Harper Ferry. They wanted to revolt against slavery and in return for the killing, they all got murdered.

    Abraham Lincoln Elected
    He got the popular vote even before getting elected. He did not win the actual election but because he got the popular vote before they elected him president. Slave states were worried that he might get elected.
  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina Secedes
    They thought if they left the Union they might have more power over whether they get to keep their slaves. So in that view of looking at it, they left.
  • The Confederacy is formed

    The Confederacy is formed
    The states came together and joined forces to create the Confederacy. They did not want to be apart of the Union because they thought they were denying their rights.
